He didn't come from nowhere, but it sure felt like he did, and it was exhausting trying to avoid another round of "Do You Feel Like We Do" or "Baby I Love Your Way". His follow-up album looked pretty vile, rushed or not, what with that come-hither Peter looking out from the cover, chest bared, and that awful string-drenched title song. But I also remember him shooting his credibility repeatedly in the foot with an embarassing music awards appearance, trading banter with R2 D2, and a series of Vegas shows (in which R2D2 put in an appearance). He also did the bizarre "St Peppers" film with the Bee Gees and then sued for top billing. Gotta admit, though, even I felt bad for how far and completely he fell out of favour, and I was greatly amused to see him in "Almost Famous". It's taken a while, but I wish him well. One day, I might even buy that live album. I haven't explored the many facets of Lady Gaga (the clips I've seen always make her come across as an animatronic version of Madonna), but I like the idea of her ditching this persona and moving on to something else. I must listen to that acoustic track. I did, however, stumble on the video for La Roux doing "In for the Kill", and surprised myself by liking it a lot. Normally, I couldn't give a toss for this new synthpop 80s revival, but this got to me. I remember reading all the rabid christian comments on imdb about how the Golden Compass had failed which would TEACH PHILIP PULLMAN A LESSON!!! kinda thing. I loved the books but the reviews I read said that they hadn't really succeeded in the adaptation and tried to cram in too much. Empire magazine ran a front-page, glittery cover story about the film with the strapline "It will change fantasy filmmaking forever" and endless puff pieces inside. Unfortunately, by the time they reviewed the film the next month, they seemed to have changed their mind and very quietly buried a subdued and dismissive review for it in their back pages. adam k nr: zeroville by Steve Erikson np: Lungs by Florence and the Machine (very, very tasty and verrry unusual) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 04:03:06 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Lady Gaga Redux Actually, I've just watched several Lady Gaga clips on YouTube, and I've decided that I really can't stand her music (or current music direction).B It reminds me of the "AsstoAss" number from the most recent series of Skins.B Can't find a video clip, but the audio is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7uRABzmR20&feature=related It's just not a genre I'm interested in. There have been a lot of comparisoins of LaRoux to Yaz(oo)--the lead singer is no Alison Moyet, but there are a few similarities--an outfront, stylish singer that doesn't quite fit the standard iconic image with a synth/musician that stays out of the spotlight. I saw the new video for Bulletproof last night. Definitely an artist to watch--incredibly catchy 80's synth pop. That show actually had a recommendation in its production bible that, if possible, a life-or-death cliffhanger should precede every commercial break. And with character names like -- Eric Raymond. Phyllis Gabor. Vivien Montgomery. Soapy soapy soapy delicious. And people compare Hannah Montana to Jem as though there could ever be any comparison. Wigs and secret identities are where the similarity ends. Jem is where it's at. ~tim - ----- Original Message ---- From: Karen Hester To: ecto@smoe.org Sent: Tuesday, July 7, 2009 9:08:53 AM Subject: all these bad movie ideas OMG Jem and the mother-fricking Holograms!!!
