I have to say, I think it's a mistake to assume that everything that is specifically created in a less-than-organic manner lacks any artistic merit. Even if something is created with a series of check boxes in mind or targeted to fill some gap in the market, it doesn't actually mean the people involved in carrying it out can't bring something to it that elevates it. I'm inclined to think it's less successful artistically then something more organic *most *of the time, but it's not impossible. When it comes down to personal preference of one song or one performer over the other that's one thing, but I'd always be careful about writing something off or being derisive about it just because of the process involved in creating the work. To me it's all about the music, and all the behind-the-scenes stuff, while occasionally interesting, is meaningless. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 2009 12:53:36 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: Great parody of Lady GaGa (who?) But, as a matter of taste.... I don't care for what I've heard and I don't spend money on that line of music, in general. It doesnt have anything to do with behind-the-scenes anything But it is amazing how you could see someone play a few times, have no interest whatsoever in hanging out with them or getting to know them personally in any way whatsoever and have someone make up a story you didn't like the music for personal reasons...and threaten you with slander or some such cos you didnt find the music to your liking... yes, it is a matter of personal taste when I don't care for Lady Gaga or Ari Shine I do not know, do I care to know them, personally. They could be the nicest people on earth but good luck getting a kid to eat peas who honestly doesnt like the way they taste.... For what it is, it's all right, although more often than not the lyrics tend to irritate me (more on that later.) But I haven't listened to it enough for it to have any lasting value in a few years or so. It's circular, sure, but that's how it works. Ask me sometime what I listened to in 2002. I could tell you where I was and what associations I had, even for things I know are fluffy. About lyrics and interviews, though. On the one hand, it's nice to see someone doing interviews that aren't "I hope you all like my latest CD! It's going to be great! I've got a few dance songs, a few ballads. I love it!" But when your interviews go in depth about self-branding for its own sake and various kinds of platitude-philosophy aimed at how to become famous, it all gets a bit offputting. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 2009 13:03:09 -0700 From: Gregory Bossert Subject: Re: Narnia On Jul 6, 2009, at 12:08 PM, birdie wrote: > There is a new "Narnia" in preproduction. Yeah Regina Spektor has always annoyed me for similar reasons and I've never been able to get into her despite trying a few times. I like a little sincerity in the delivery. Tori on ADP...Her personnas and wigs are a little silly but the music ranges from solid to very good so I just ignore the gimmicks. Tim Jones-Yelvington wrote: > I don't know... Wait, you mean you don't think the lyric "Cause i'm bluffin' with my muffin / I'm not lying / I'm just stunnin' / With my love-glue-gunning" isn't going to enter the annals of great songwriting. :) I should be clear that I don't think she should win a Novello award or anything. I just like the beat and chorus. Heh. I'll definitely check this Oona person out once I'm at home though. I'm always up for trying someone new. I still have my Viewmaster & all the reels, but for heaven's sake, I was a kid in the age before VCRs, DVD players, TiVo, Nintendo, etc. We were much more easily entertained back then. To today's youngsters, the Viewmaster probably seems as ancient as Victrolas did to me back in the 1970s. I predict this movie will never be made. The Ouija board makes the most sense to me. That one practically writes itself. I think we can all blame "Pirates of the Caribbean" for this. Who would have guessed that a Disneyland ride would spawn a billion dollar movie franchise. - --Sue ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 2009 14:34:07 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: Great parody of Lady GaGa (who?) When I saw her do one verse of "What Have I Done To Deserve This" during a PSB medley on the brit awards.... I was surprised at how deep her voice was and how she was wavering..... and yes, there was no comparison whatsoever with Dusty! None! She was on and off again in a blink, and so - I really rather dismissed her there as just a rather kitschy-campy stand-in.... with no further thought. The only part I took seriously was that I was happy for my friend Allee Willis, who wrote the song (and the parts Dusty sang) with the PSB's, as always good for things to get revived and to see my friends, earn some cash... No one is touting Lady Gaga as a great singer, like Dusty - so - really, I have no complaints, and it was actually rather brave of her!! Them's some huge ass shoes to fill. She will never even come close... Soo...she did it her flavor of the month way, and thats appropriate. No problems with that.... One thing that really rankles me is when copy cat or lesser talents have a hype machine that makes them seem in print, better than they will ever be in their wildest dreams. Copy cat bullshit artists that will rip other artists styles and sell it for less via song pluggers....et al. Really irritate me to no end, and have always been rather the parasites of real artists.... Of course, now we've got Rundgren saying "Hello, it's me" on the Tums commerical...The Moody Blues "Tuesday, Afternoon" on the Aqarium of the Paciic adverts (stunningly beayuful jellyfish swimming away to the mood blues...fabulous! inspiring! love it!) and...oh, yeah, Petey having a spot of fun in the kitchen on the grecico ad... So, the copy cat con-artist types are getting squeezed out about from the real deals... I'm not complaining... It's been entertaining and I love original artists and songwriters get their due. birdie On Jul 6, 2009, at 2:02 PM, Tim Jones-Yelvington wrote: > I don't know...
