The only people looking for "deals" are peeps who don't know how to work their own business. No one I know wants a label deal. It's like asking big daddy to take care of you and all you'll get is a tiny allowance maybe co-dependency issues & artists have hit an all new era. In any event, I hope Amanda is out of hers... Once you have a following you can do well as an artist without a major label deal but, while stories like this are inspiring, the major labels are still the gatekeepers of who actually gets well known. I wonder if we will ever see an artist ever get really big without *ever* signing a major label deal. It would be really cool if that happened but doesn't seem to likely in the current environment. In Twitter terms it isn't all that huge-ass. I mean, 33,257 people is a lot, but on a site where, say, Ashton Kutcher can get 1 million people, it's not all that many. Still pretty damn out of reach for people without a built-in following, though. - -Sarah Quoting Paul Blair : > I think it's also that she's cashing in on the following she already has, > and the huge-ass ben-folds produced-major-label solo album is part (I have > no idea how significant) of why she has that following. > > On Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 6:35 PM, Karen Hester wrote: > >> >> http://mikeking.berkleemusicblogs.com/2009/06/23/how-an-indie-musician-can-make-19000-in-10-hours-using-twitter/ >> >> "total made on twitter in two hours = $11,000. >> total made from my huge-ass ben-folds produced-major-label solo album this >> year = $0" >> >> Ouch. It's not an album driven business anymore its all about free downloads and mostly, singles. Who cares about really big when really big means you have to sell out like Fergie and get all kinds of sponsorship deals. ? What about making a comfortable middle class earning for yourself? All kinds bling and hype doesn't make for fabulous artists or music Still waiting for the philharmonic to take up grills on their teeth, mondo BS hype, and crotch grabbing to sell their music eh, well...they dont have to resort to bling T&A or BS to sell themselves....let alone, diet pepsi. What was the last really amazing group or artist that made it really big? I wanna know. Jill Sobule is the biggest indie success story at the moment She has been featured on everything from NPR to CNN She is fan funded Subscription services will be at the forefront this coming year. The labels don't own them and, they don't own iTunes. If you have enough going on in terms of innovation, being on the ball with current trends, and are able to enjoy large communities of people within your sphere.....and have a great team, plenty of good material and game plan.... and, work within a framework like TopSpin.... You can and will make much more money and have loads more fun and therefore...make much more music. I can assure you that indie artists, who are outstanding - do get recognized and patched into major media. And are being so - as we speak - without any support from a record deal. And now, back to my lab - as you won't even believe what I'm cooking up... :-) Birdie On Jun 23, 2009, at 4:59 PM, Michael Quinn wrote: > Yeah, seems like that is the problem. If by "big" you mean "serially on the cover of Rolling Stone and doing stadium tours", you're probably right ... at least for now. But if by "big" you mean "a household name in the circles you travel in and able to continually sell out mid- to large-sized theaters and headline major summer festivals on your own tour bus, all the while pulling in enough to not only make a comfortable living but also fund the careers of other people", I'd say Ani DiFranco has done pretty well by her own indie self. It's entirely that she's cashing in on her existing following (and dating one of the most popular cult figures in the worlds of genre fiction, comics and film isn't hurting her one little bit on that front ... yeah, she may have "only" 33k+ followers on Twitter, but one RT from Mr. @neilhimself gets it out to almost 600,000 more). But I would wager that at least 90% of that following is Dresden Dolls fans who have followed her to her solo career. Roadrunner did very, very little to promote _Who Killed Amanda Palmer_ on their own, which is one of the many reasons why she wanted out of the deal. She proved that she could do it better herself.
