Re the article..Saw a similar one on Swedish female singers..Apparently Lykke Li, Nina Persson and Robyn are all of the same genre..The future is female it said, disregarding the male singers that are making themselves known. I should like to think that being a woman is not a genre. That women artists are getting attention is nice, but it's even better if it's all down to talent rather than novelty. Not suggesting that any of the ladies in the article are untalented..but their individual talent gets second status to being "female". I hope I'm not forgetting any.. Tori Amos: "Abnormally Attracted to Sin" Miranda Lee Richards: "Light of X" A Camp: "Colonia" Camera Obscura: "My Maudlin Career" Marissa Nadler: "Little Hells" Fever Ray: "Fever Ray" Maria Taylor: "Ladyluck" Gaba Kulka: "Hat, Rabbit" Alela Diane: "To Be Still" I'm utterly in love with the new Camera Obscura - it was worth the long wait.. Maria Taylor's new one is nice, but hasn't grabbed me emotionally the way I hoped.. Anyone else check out "Fever Ray"? Completely bizarre and unique - I love it, though the mood is a bit dark for my tastes lately. Miranda Lee Richards deserves to be heard - her new album is just beautiful. A real stunner. The one standout disappointment for me thus far is the new Au Revoir Simone. Nowhere near as catchy and 'bright' as their previous.. I'm hoping it will grow on me, but so far it hasn't. Any other new releases I need to check out?? Paul - -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "This is the time. I really enjoyed Twiggy Frostbite's "Through Fire" debut. It's nice downtempo electronica with a little shoegaze influence and good breathy vocals. Reminds me a little of older Halou. Unto Ashes album "The Blood of My Lady" is also worthy of mention. The titlle of this might scare some away but really doesn't describe the music which is nice dreamy psych folk. Hi, My most notable releases of 2009 so far: * Vienna Teng, "Inland Territory" * The Decemberists, "The Hazards of Love" * PJ Harvey and John Parish, "A Woman A Man Walked By" ... and I haven't heard the new Metric or Bat for Lashes or St Vincent or Jill Sobule yet, but there is a huge stack of new CDs on the table that I plan on dipping into tomorrow. It's sure been a banner year for potentially interesting new releases so far!! When did this happen? Well, apparently.... tomorrow... on iTunes! But it's up now in the US! I just downloaded it. I thought it was supposed to come out June 2nd but it's on there now. I haven't had a chance to listen to it but I loved her last album and "Bitter Song" and was so sad when the first release fell apart. Can't wait to hear what the album sounds like. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 May 2009 23:19:13 -0500 From: Jon Wesley Huff Subject: Re: 2009 so far.. Michael, you had me at "Halou." I'll have to check them out. So far my favorites are: Bat For Lashes - Two Suns Miranda Lee Richards - Light of X Tori Amos - Abnormally Attracted to Sin (a nice rebound after the last albums were a bit "meh"to me) Neko Case - Middle Cyclone Metric - Fantasies and Fever Ray. Also, one that was released a couple years ago but is new to me: Lisa Miskovsky - Changes St. Vincent's album is nice but hasn't quite connected with me like the last one yet. I'll definitely check out Carina Round's new Ep. Hadn't realized that was out yet. There's still a lot of great music to come too.
