(oops, looks like i missed two albums: "Red Bird" > and "The Jasmine Flower" -- any opinions?) Both these albums are worth picking up, especially The Jasmine Flower. Redbird is good pop/rock. The Jasmine Flower is the best thing Heather's done in a while. Gorgeous, very pure, just Heathers voice and guitar, hardly any backing vocals even. This is the album I think people have been wanting her to make for years. The last track, Always Christmas, is different and sounds like something that could have come from Oyster, reminding that she does pop/rock very well too. _________________________________________________________________ Rediscover Hotmail.: Now available on your iPhone or BlackBerry http://windowslive.com/RediscoverHotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Rediscover_Mobi le1_042009 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 2009 18:36:57 -0700 From: birdie Subject: amanda palmer secret show + coachella just back in from a secret show by Amanda Palmer (solo) at Smash Labs in downtown LA - very intimate and fun show w/ interview by After Ellen afterwards and also, Current TV shot it. Stripped down like "Storm" but a lot richer and more passionate, less inert. Some interesting strings and stuff too. Heather Nova will never be like--- a great innovative singular artist or anything, but she's reliably pleasant and has that friggin voice, which is all kinds of special. ~tim On 4/15/09 8:21 PM, "JoAnn Whetsell" wrote: > Greg wrote: >> and speaking of "in search of..." artists, any news of: >> >> *Heather Nova? [...] thanks for the feedback. both albums are definitely on my list! Madonna has recorded at least a few great songs, Kate Bush has recorded at least a few stinkers. the recent discussion of the Hootie song, well, sheesh, if it's a good song it's a good song. obviously, artists develop styles and skills that are evident in their art, and that means it's convenient to discuss their past work as a whole, and convenient to have expectations about their future work based on their past output. but by "convenient" i mean easy, and not necessarily useful. we all seem to prefer to feel the artist behind the art. i think that's partially because we tend to experience art as something being directed at us from some other. and it's obvious from even the most trivial sociological research -- say, turning on the TV -- that we want superstar gods and goddesses of art. and history, sociology, and anthropology seem to support that as a universal element of human culture. i work at -- and i'll admit that i don't always succeed -- not worrying about the artist, and focusing on the art. not reading those little tags by the paintings in the museum. not popping open iTunes to check who i'm listening to. the advantage being that it seems to open up a wider range of options, and as far as i can tell, more good art = more happy. anyway, i didn't mean to pick on Tim's statement in particular! i do, mean, however, to go pick up The Jasmine Flower! I think "Ride" is a great opening track. There are definitely some great tracks on it and it's really heartening. I was about to give up hope. I think everything after Siren has been good but only JUST good. There were always a few tracks to cling to but overall I did find the listening experience on South, Storm and Red Bird to be just a little forgettable overall. The latter especially I had a hard time getting into. Certainly nothing like Oyster or Glow Stars (my two favorite albums.) But I definitely have to say she's been a singular artist in the past. I think around South she lost something... that hard-to-define Oomph that sort of propels songwriting into great territory. But on her past albums she had songs that really just cut into me, grabbed my ears and my heart and wouldn't let go. Songs like Spirit in You, Shell, and Frontier from Glowstars always mesmerized me. I also have a strong affinity for the title track of that album. Her live work is always good too. I really like both Blow and Live from the Milky Way. You really haven't heard Maybe An Angel until you've heard it on the latter. And of course Oyster has the gut wrenching Island and Walking Higher. A few things people might want to check out are some of her collaborative and B-side stuff. I really love Someone New, a track she recorded with Eskobar. It's a great pop song. And some of her collaborations with ATB have been nice if you like electronic music. But one song I definitely recommend checking out is Man In The Ocean. I think it was recorded around the time South came out and it's a better track then most of the ones that made it on the album in my humble opinion.
