Last night they were a rumbling bass mush. No melody was audible from the numerous keyboards and machines with knobs, and the vocals were often low in the mix. That left the low thump thump growl and electronic crackle that took up residence in my throat. New Order's 'Blue Monday' might be the only song I can recognize by muffled distorted bass & beats alone. Perhaps Kate's 'Running up that hill,' since her high voice cuts through. But Ladytron's songs are often minimalist so I had to concentrate on the vocals to figure out which song was which. The previous band (The Faint) sounded fine, and Ladytron only complained to their sound people when vocals were low or keyboards disconnected, so I assume they think a morass of indistinguishable bass buzz is good. The song where the thump thump tickled my tonsils and made me feel queasy? Runaway. The song where the thump thump wriggled into my intestines and reorganized my dinner? Tomorrow. The song with bats in my throat? Destroy everything you touch.. The song where I discovered that an open mouth felt like an echo chamber? Versus. The song which reminded me of living on top of the lively Wellington earthquake fault? I'm not scared. The song during which there was a kerfuffle on the dance-floor, perhaps involving weapons? International dateline. The song that produced a buzzing thump with a frequency matching that of my body and my insides were pulverized? No, wait, that was an episode of Bones. Helen and Mira are fine on record, their detached and plain singing matching the music and Helen's pretty tones contrasting nicely. They were mediocre live: Mira tuneless and murky, Helen carefully singing each note separately, brief and sharp. That clipped singing style combined with her pant suit and spelling-it-out hand motions (she'd sing 'no' and wag her finger) made Helen seem like a deranged business consultant as she explained, with gestures "they only want you when you're seventeen, when you're twentyone, you're no fun." The LED light screens behind the band were cool. Reuben Wu had a fancy pompadour so his silhouette against the colors, usually red, looked great.
