Kerry, in the event that your Terry Garthwaite LP is scratched to all kingdom come.... it was re-issued a little while back on CD...and is prolly in the shops in SF On another note - I walked home from the Viper Room and ran to the shower. haha For a place that displays whiskey for up to $700 a bottle on their menus (I was gonna take a picture but...it was just tooooo absurd, i swear it must have been a leftover prop from the early 90's) it has all the feel of a burnt out fishbowl with crappy sound.....soooo, it was the dregs, darllings... But Oona.... I realised tonight, reminds of an early Bette Midler - as a singer - she has all that energy, vocal verve and intensity that Bette had - back in the 70's, and we just do not see singers like that anymore. So, that put a smile on my face. But man, sunset is just....I don't see how it's going to get better....shops are closing down, and it's definitely getting funkier. Not pretty. I was talking to one of the fella's from Hotel Cafe and they were telling me that a lot of bars/venues are going under here - I know Tangier went under in december. Anyway, other cities must be in the same boat and I am simply going to stick with venues with good sound & lighting, great booking policies, and that treat the bands and customers, well. After tonight, i have no interest in wandering from the good listening rooms in town, left (Tangier was on this list) - Hotel Cafe, Room 5, The Mint, McCabe's, Largo....and, The Troubador. As Oona is in town til saturday, we may go to the new Largo tomorrow night to see Carina Round, as we are both interested in checking the room out (I'll post deets re: the show 'nother post).... But Sunset....eh....it seriously needs a make-over but it is sooooo unattractive at this point, and as the great venues need all the support they can get, i'm afraid it is just headed further down the drain. That said, the shower was great! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Mar 2009 23:55:06 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Carina Round Carina Round 3/26/2009 9:00 PM at Largo at the Coronet little room W/ Sierra Swan 366 N La Cienega Boulevard, West Hollywood, California 90048 Cost: 15 or 2 for 1 Adam, she is working on raising funds to get back to NY/Toronto/UK to do some shows june/july She has these other dates in LA coming up, down the road... It's probably the same way that Hulu, Showtime etc. can limit content to the United States. I can't see Hulu videos as I'm outside of the US. I couldn't even see anything on Showtime about 'Dead Like Me' when it first aired because the Showtime website could tell I wasn't in the US. (1) Pandora isn't available outside of the US because they're been unable to negotiate satisfactory terms with the appropriate licensing collectives/PROs/etc. (2) About a year ago, inside the US, the royalty rates for webcasters were set to increase markedly. After much protest and lobbying, this was fixed, either through legislation or private negotiation (I can't remember which). It's a shame because I used to really like Pandora but have no way to listen to it now. It used to be that if you just told a little white lie when signing up and said you were from the US it would let you listen but about a year ago they put that IP blocker in. They posted something on the site saying they didn't want to do it but couldn't negotiate anything to let them broadcast legally in other countries (I guess money was the issue). It sucks for people outside the US like me who used to enjoy the site though. Paul Schreiber wrote: > Sarah wrote: > > >> As I understand it, it wasn't always that way. There is a way to work around it - use an http proxy located in the target country (in this case, the US). You should be able to configure your browser to use a proxy *only* for pandora.com, and then use one of the available proxies. Here is a web page that explains this in some detail. If you are interested in this, you should read it (And perhaps do some additional research as well if you have more questions) http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/howto.htm There are some tools available that make it easier by checking the currently known open proxies and finding one that's performing adequately. Apparently there's also a paid private proxy service called IPRental.com. I don't know anything about it but saw it referenced in a thread specifically about getting at pandora from outside the US. I've never used a proxy for this purpose myself, but I've run http proxy servers for my office so I'm aware of the possibility. - --jessica Michael Quinn wrote: > Y > eah, > > If you're outside the US it will block your IP.
