Yeah, I rarely listen to 'Children running through' - quite MOR and uninspired to me, not enough edges or heartbreak. Reports are Patty says the new one will be gospel-ish, in line with 'Up to the mountain (MLK song)'. Not my cup of tea - I prefer Patty's rock, folk, country and pop to her gospel stuff. On Martin Luther King day I saw the mini-doco 'The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306' with interviews with Reverend Samuel "Billy" Kyles who was the one person on the balcony with King, and there were snippets of the Up to the mountain speech. I listened to Patty's song after that, which gave it extra power. Hey, it took an ecto post several years after the fact to spell out to me that auntiesocialmusic.com is anti-social music. Doesn't work with an English/colonial long A. K ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2009 10:13:25 -0500 From: Karen Hester Subject: Dar Williams, Joshua Radin Dar Williams, Joshua Radin, Jesse Harris, Webster Hall 24th Jan Opener Jesse Harris and his drummer played in both the subsequent bands. Jesse played banjo for his section, lots of pleasant very similar sounding songs which drew on old-timey genres. Would have enjoyed it more had I remembered my book. Who are all these under-dressed petite women with straight shiny hair, so reflective you could check your teeth for remnants of dinner? Ah, they're in love with Joshua Radin. His band started without him so he could run on just before the vocals to a great cheer. Showmanship or ego? The girls pressed forward, squealed, called out that he move the second microphone because it was blocking their view of him. He looked like a dumpier Paul Rudd, very schlubby. If I liked his music, I would of course say a cuddlier, scruffier Paul Rudd :) The problem was that Joshua Radin's music is of an inbetween sort, not catchy enough, rocking enough, folky, country, anything enough, and his voice is ordinary, which leaves lyrics, but they were pretty bland, with clunkers as highlights. Much of Dar's middle period is too inbetweeny for me, but sometimes a sharp or gorgeous lyric breaks the monotony. I didn't mind a Buddy Holly-influenced number about a woman with 'librarian glasses' who drove a vegetable oil car. The closing Sam Cooke cover was good, but made me want to listen to Cooke. He wasn't bad at all, and I can understand how other people including ectophiles would enjoy the music. However his audience weren't particularly interested in the music - they'd squeal and mouth along to the first few lines, then start talking, or just stand there blankly. If I'd been in love, I'd have been jumping around wildly. I don't think they were music fans, more people who sometimes listen to music when drinking and socializing. The admirers did enjoy it when he said if there were any women who were criers with a book of poetry in their backpack, then "we should meet" (he being newly single). At the end of his set, half the audience cleared out and there was much less shiny straight hair. Don't worry, I realize taste isn't intrinsic to hair type, and many of my best friends have straight hair. My first Dar concert, and she was charming and witty and her voice sounded lovely. It was mainly straight-forward full band rock/pop - can't be subtle and acoustic at a noisy standing only club. She and band (guitars, keyboard, upright bass, drums) played lots from the new album ('It's alright', 'Book of love', the boring Fountains of Wayne cover etc) plus 'February', 'Spring Street.' She ended with 'Babysitter' since someone Joshua Radin babysat for turned up. I was so sad that she didn't play 'Buzzer', my fav by far from the new album, that it made me resent every other song on the set-list. How can she not realize that song is the star? Funny how by now she's had a lot more commercial success than Becca ever achieved yet I think for me she will forever be 'Bec's little sis'... It might have something to do with the fact that the first time I saw Mercy Bell play (they were still called Eat The Menu at the time) remains one of most memorable gig experiences I've ever had, and whatever wonderful things Butterfly might do, it will never change that memory.
