Many of these albums are available through emusic and I'll definitely check them out as soon as my downloads refresh. I haven't seen Eleni Mandell live unfortunately - but I have listened A LOT to her latest album, Miracle of Five. Her sound is quite retro in a very atmospheric, slightly jazzy late-night-drinking-whisky kind of way that I'm personally quite enamored of even though it does remind me a bit too much of Norah Jones at times. Anyway, I have included the opening track, Moonglow, Lamp Low on so many mixed cd's for friends lately and am presently looking into her back catalogue, but finding nothing as splendid as her latest offering. Afternoon from 2004 is quite boring, in my opinion, and Country for True Lovers hasn't grabbed me, either. I'm still in the south of India working on my gothic extravaganza and a couple of days ago I went on a day trip to the old Danish colony of Tranquebar. Being Danish I have heard about this place all my life because Danes are so hilariously proud of their colonializing past but really, it was just a windswept beach and a main street with fundamentalist quotations from the Bible painted all over the walls. Besides I hadn't quite realized how far from Pondicherry it was so I basically found myself in a car for ten hours with nothing to do. I hadn't brought my ipod and all I had on my cell phone was Dido's latest album which I had written off as Enya-esque and dull before even listening to it. Now I had all the time in the world to listen, though, and I did. For ten hours in a row. The album is no radical departure for Dido, but it's certainly a well-crafted, elegant, and inspired effort and there are no fillers here. That was my main problem with her previous two albums; they started out well with two or three decent tracks and just vanished into a bleak and samey batch of songs after that. Also, Dido just seems a little too nice and sweet and ordinary for my acquired taste, but I really think she has grown as a performer this time around. The lyrics aren't deep or provocative in any way, but the melodies are consistently strong, the arrangements are tasty without being cheesy, and her voice is really quite lovely. I keep returning to tracks like the infectious Quiet Times, the beautiful Northern Skies, and the slightly Enya-esque Grafton Street. I have come to love this album. It will forever remind me of India. All the best from Pondicherry, Leonora "I never go outside unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star. I saw someone tonight who saw EM on friday, too and he described her as Morose. I thought she was cold - a bit detached, but I think he nailed it. He agreed the band was tight and there was some visuals going on but like me...he wasn't that impressed. I didn't get the CD, didn't plan on seeing her again, didn't post the pictures, etc.. But you might like the pix, so I put them up for you and Neal. I'll take them down in a bit cos, I m actually a complete fuss bucket and musically, only prefer to post pix of peeps I really support - she just wasn't my thing...but I liked the guitars! Alright then, go to www.myspace.com/birdiepix and look in the hotel cafe pic folder - might be on page 4. 2 pix of Eleni ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 01:48:02 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Eleni Mandell? Thanks for posting the pics. Kind of hard to really tell anything from them. Though the pics after that look like a blast :) I think the songs on the album stand up pretty well. They seem edgier and more jagged in what I've seen of live clips. After suffering one bizarre opening act and one quite good one (Aussie Merri-May Gill) Eleni took the stage and peformed as if under some punitive contract. Sullen, disinterested, staring blankly ahead and acting as if it was the last place in the world she wanted to be. I heard, later, that she was ill, which is fair enough, but the 12 Bar isn't a tough gig (seats about 50 at a pinch, and she was on for about an hour, tops) and not long after that I saw Thea Gilmore take the stage at the Scala (about 10 times bigger) with the flu and blow the place down. In further mitigation, however, Eleni also got grief from the peanut gallery, a group of women talking all the way through until another audience member stormed up there and shut them up. She certainly looked like that was getting to her. Unless you happen to like the other possessive convention "Wenders's" (as Strunk & White recommends). I at least like to pronounce it that way because its makes the spoken form of the possessive distinct, although it's also nicely consistent for writing (you just always add "'s"). But I don't want to start a grammar war on Ecto. As I recall Wenders does like to use quite a bit of Ectoish music. Quite some time ago I saw "Until the End of the World" which had Jane Siberry in the soundtrack. > jessica spurling wrote: > > I saw Wim Wender's newest movie last night, Palermo Shooting. My only sadness is that Peter Gabriel wouldn't let his song from the movie be on the soundtrack. So sad. The version in the movie is quite different from the version he released on his own album that year. Having it on the soundtrack would 'complete' it for me, as that long is significant for the atmosphere at that moment in the movie. Ah well! It's still an incredibly good soundtrack, a must-listen if you haven't already. Or better yet, see the movie :) - -jessica ps: birdie: very cool about your friend Ronee and Wim Wenders!
