One song struck me--it sounded like Karen Peris of Innocence Mission singing "Alleluia" over and over. I guess that's not particularly out of keeping with Innocence Mission, but I was pretty sure it wasn't them. There wasn't much in the way of other lyrics but fortunately I was able to grab onto something and looked it up. The song is *Los Cruzados* by Elk City, a New York-based band I'd never heard of before: http://www.myspace.com/elkcity I couldn't make much sense of the lyrics--on a blog somewhere I read that "Renee mentions that most of these songs came to her in dreams and she pieced the melodies together in her sleep waking up and recording/writing down bits at a time." Which is good, since I was hoping it wasn't some "Christian music" band singing praises of crusaders. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jan 2009 05:51:32 +0100 From: Leonora Christina Skov Subject: Elk City Dreampop, Jill Tracy & Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys Thanks for mentioning Elk City. They have three albums up on emusic and from the samples they sound pretty similar to Belly and The Breeders, in my opinion - - at least on their latest outing New Believers. Not a bad thing at all. I'll definitely check them out when my downloads refresh. Presently I listen to Jill Tracy's back catalogue like crazy. I would never have discovered her without you guys and she is such a talented and visionary artist. Thank you for raving about her. I'm writing a gothic novel inspired by Rebecca and Jane Eyre at present (in Pondicherry of all places..) and Jill Tracy's music captures the atmosphere of my writing completely. I am looking into similar gothic/cabaret/dark artists right now, but I have trouble finding anyone as brilliant as her. There are the Dresden Dolls, of course, and PJ's latest, Hannah Fury, Sophe Lux, and Kristeen Young. They're quite outstanding, too. Then there's Clare Fader, Emily Autumn, Jennifer Terran, Marissa Nadler, and Sylvie Lewis which I don't find that inspiring. Any further suggestions? Finally, I have just discovered a true original: Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys. She's not really ecto, but she sure is fun. Here she is on MySpace: www.myspace.com/janetklein And here's what emusic has to say about her: "With her sleek bob haircut (usually with a flower or two placed just so), vintage dresses, strikingly beautiful looks, and artfully customized ukulele, Janet Klein might seem at first to be a simple novelty act, a Generation X hipster ironically recreating the subtly naughty look of a fin-de-sihcle French postcard. Then she opens her mouth to sing. There's no Betty Boop hiccups or Mae West-style brassiness in her charmingly original voice. And when she starts to play the ukulele, it's clear that this oft-ridiculed cousin of the guitar is neither prop nor gimmick, but a delightful and underutilized musical instrument. Bearing an ever-expanding repertoire of, as she puts it, "obscure, lovely, and naughty songs from the '10s, '20s, and '30s," Janet Klein is a musical archeologist hiding in a Gibson girl's body." Enjoy :-) Best, Leonora "I never go outside unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star. Which is good, since I was > hoping it wasn't some "Christian music" band singing praises of > crusaders. most contemporary Christian music is still way too much like a pop influence on the kind of crap we used hear when we stumbled upon an Oral Roberts broadcast. most of it is truly disgusting. some music influenced by Christian sentiments in Latin (Hildegard von Bingen) that is ecto-compatible is from Richard Souther (with Emily van Evera & Sr Germaine Fritz singing). the second track in the Illumination album (i think it's called something like "fire of the spirit") is really quite wonderful and worthy of calling it "ecto". - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jan 2009 00:31:14 -0500 From: morayati@email.unc.edu Subject: Re: Elk City Dreampop, Jill Tracy & Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys If it's atmosphere you're going for, the McCarricks' 3 is musically different, but definitely coming from the same place.
