Re: My Brightest Diamond news [Tour (FREE TICKETS) | Remix EP | New Video] got home from the show a little while ago. wow. really. unbelievably fantastic. shara worden is *so* funny, creative, gorgeous, brilliant, evocative, emotive, passionate, and talented. clare and the reasons were a lot of fun, but occasionally clare's voice got too-much-the-same for me. olivier totally made up for it, playing at least 10 different instruments, and being generally strange and funny. during the my brightest diamond set, olivier did a magic trick. :) he was truly the star of clare and the reasons for me! but their music was quite beautiful and fun, and there were a couple of songs I'd really like to hear again. the reasons were an excellent backup band for mbd. olivier played bass as needed, and there were samples to get some of the percussion and other random sounds. the energy was great. i have to say, shara seemed a little 'off' a couple of times - whereas when we saw her last spring the show was utmost perfection. this time there were just a couple of moments where she missed something a little on the guitar and it seemed like she'd gotten thrown off. was not a big deal at all - not to me/the audience, if many people even noticed. we were sitting front row and center so I was watching her hands and face closely. oh, and she did the *funniest* thing while tuning at one point. started singing a little tuning blues song. *very* silly. she is really over the top silly sometimes. a couple of the songs were just *magical* - some have stories with them, and the combination of the stories and theatrics and music just gave me shivers. and speaking of theatrics.. for one of the last songs they did a little extra theatrics which i may not describe 'til the end of the tour in case anyone else on the list sees them, i'd love for that to be a surprise for you. i doubt i will ever miss an opportunity to see shara worden perform. she is truly remarkable. - --jessica jessica spurling wrote: > jessica spurling wrote: >> it works for me! >> >> i totally agree about her guitar playing, john and i were mesmerized. >> she's good and *interesting*. But it looked like it was an early show and there was mixed interest in our group, and since we'll have the show back in New Mexico next week, I figured I could wait. And it doesn't look like it was all that early a show either! Many thanks to the folks who mentioned it last month; I was pretty well sold on going just from listening to some of the song samples on the My Brightest Diamond web site. Clare was very funny; everyone really enjoyed her song "Can Your Car Do That, I Don't Think So" (if that's not the title, it's at least the chorus). I didn't realize the show was basically going to be one band with two different lead singers until all the same people who had played with Clare got up on stage with Shara. I always find it hard to describe music, so I won't dance about the architecture, but the thing that struck me after the show was how from one song to another Shara Worden would tip back and forth from hauntingly beautiful to outright silly, but somehow that never seemed out of place when it was happening. You're in for a treat when they come to New Mexico. I uncharacteristically splurged and bought up what looked like the entire My Brightest Diamond CD collection that was on sale at the show, and also a copy of the "Clare and the Reasons: The Movie" CD, which I suspect a friend of mine will enjoy. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Nov 2008 18:46:06 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Thanks Paul & Rachael Yamagata I have the Rachel Yamagata CD. I didn't have her first one, so can't really compare, but I like this one. It's actually two CD's. One is quieter (and apparently more like the previous CD). The second one is more raucous and more like PJ Harvey. I've listened to Elephants, the quieter one, more. I think it has some great songs on it and is really interesting. I think my favorite track is the almost 9 minute Sunday Afternoon. It comes very close to bombastic overkill, but for me hovers just on the right side, being lush, expansive, powerful and just shy of too much. I've been totally into the CD Arms Away by Islands, which is more of an indie rock kind of thing and not particularly ecto at all. But it's all over the map in styles and really catchy. It seems to be getting pretty mixed reviews. neal np: Cardinology - Ryan Adams & The Cardinals ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2008 11:36:40 -0800 From: jessica spurling Subject: Re: San francisco area reminder, this saturday! Re: My Brightest Diamond news [Tour (FREE TICKETS) | Remix EP | New Video] doors were 6:30pm, show started around 7:30pm with clare and the reasons. things wrapped up around 10pmish. it was *freezing* in there. FREEZING. I was shivering so hard towards the end, it was painful. Soooooo. you'll probably be more comfortable in NM at the very least! Had I known, I'd have brought gloves/hat/scarf! I've been to The Swedish American Hall for parties before, but never for a show. It's been plenty warm for the parties (summer), so I wasn't expecting the cold. It was a lovely space for the show, the sound was good. But the seats were small and hard folding chairs, and it was way too cold. Also, no alcohol sales there. Not a big deal, just odd! Crappy coffee (i tried it in an attempt to warm up), lousy tea selection. I could really have gone for a glass of wine! All that didn't actually detract from how incredible the show was, though. :) - --jessica neal copperman wrote: > Awesome. I can use some of that :) > > I almost went to that show. Aside from schlepping my solo show to Berlin, Netherlands, New Zealand, Belgium, and myriad funky venues and highly selective colleges throughout our great land, my focus has mainly been on composing for ensembles, usually in combination with live electronics and looping technology. Highlights have included works for the Robin Cox ensemble (LA) and Present Music (Milwaukee), a site-specific piece for wandering chorus (New Zealand), a song cycle for 7 looped vocalists based on recipes collected at the Terezin concentration camp (commissioned by the SF Jewish Music Festival), and my current pride and joy "The Secret Language of Subways" -- a song cycle with 3 cellos and live electronics -- which has been getting a lot of attention 'round these CA parts. CD of that comes out in the spring. - ------ Also of late I've gotten mixed up with these crazy European dudes who work with circuit-bending and homemade electronics. So as part of the Roulette show I'll be introducing my latest work-in-development "The Dude Trilogy" for voice and Blippoo Box -- a very cute analog synth created for me by Dutch instrument designer Rob Hordijk and operated using hand motions and a Theremin-like antenna. Also your own local anti-folk hero and discarded-technology geek Steve Espinola will join me for an experiment in live looping using archaic recording gadgets. And the rest of the show will consist of my solo classics and a few things you may not have heard. Roulette is one of my favorite places to play -- great acoustics and always a nice crowd. Please come by and say hello. Love and xx -- a ********************* If you would like to be removed from this list, please let me know.
