I know this show will be different from the one I saw previously - when I saw them before it was just shura, bass, drums. lots of rocking. This show will clearly be different! We've got the show here Nov 30 and we could use >some nice reviews to promote the show :) okay okay! meredith was unable to attend the show because of work so i went to the space in hamden to see them. met up with jason, michael curry and another crypto-ectophile who had gotten there early and corraled some seats up front. joined them and chatted for a while until the music got going. unbeknown to me, there was a third band on the bill, playing first. they were from burlington and i believe their name was maja or maca or something like that. two guys, one guitar, on drum kit, one sequencer, one singer, two mics. sometimes they were indierawk (tm) and sometimes they were atmospheric. i actually kinda liked them except that they played a wee bit too long and the drummer had only one setting: too loud for the room. so, ear fatigue set in quickly. fortunately, claire and the reasons were pleasantly low volume. i had heard a few songs from their record previously and wasn't too overwhelmed but found them enjoyable. live though, they were very nice. in this configuration, claire was joined by oliver marchon on everything, marla hansen on viola and a cellist whose name is escaping me. they were all dressed in red. including their shoes. claire was sick. oliver may have been as well. not sure about that but we are sure he does not like peanut butter. they played a too short set of vaguely jazzy retro-pop which was, like the band themselves, a lot of fun. finally, my brightest diamond came on. shara was joined by the reasons for her set and they went right into it. i'm always shocked by how good a guitarist she is and how articulate her playing is so i spent most of the show just pretty much watching her fingers. i think this performance was better than the last time she was at the space and, in fact, beat out the a thousand shark's teeth release show earlier this year since it was just more cohesive and together. i don't remember the setlist (and stupidly did not record for various stupid reasons) but it was mostly drawn from the newer record. she did do her cover of "when doves cry," which i could have lived without. it's a fine cover but that's the prince song everyone does and i'd rather it not bump something else out of the set. my only complaint: it wasn't loud enough. granted, she was joined by strings but still, my brightest diamond has a sound that benefits from volume, volume, volume. i suppose that's not really a review per se but it's all i gots! woj n.p. new pornographers -- live from the future ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Nov 2008 09:19:11 -0500 From: Kristeen Young Subject: small club tour > Hope you can attend one of the following KRISTEENYOUNG shows.
