Nigel Stonier starts blowing into his harmonica and we laugh, knowing this is the Dylan tune, until Thea sings the opening lines: "I'm coming up / so you better get this party started." (A hit from Pink.) A great deal of fun, and much more interesting than 'I pity the poor immigrant', a poor choice of Dylan. This was my first Thea concert, and I don't know her music after 2005 cos that's the last of her stuff on emusic :) She played 'This girl is taking bets', 'Rosie', 'God's got nothing on you', 'Seen it all before', 'Old soul', 'Dance in NY', her one happy song ('Keep up'?), a song she wrote for an emotional friend on Obama election night (finished 2 minutes before the networks declared him), sing-along song "Are you ready" where she jumped among the crowd to get us going, and perhaps 'St Luke's summer', among others. Her voice was gorgeous, and I concentrated on that through the numerous similar ballads. Her songwriting pattern was more obvious live than on record where she plays around with sounds more - verses using lots of repetition, quite rhythmical, then a chorus that allows her voice to soar, then verse / chorus / verse / chorus / verse / chorus, a few too many times. Quite Dylanesque, though I enjoyed her songs more than her D cover. All the acoustic guitar strumming, with Thea and Nigel playing the same rhythm and Nigel ornamenting just a little, got so strummy that I had several flashbacks to school singalongs (strum strum strum). Perhaps the simplest and least varying guitar playing I've seen from a good songwriter. The 92Y Tribeca is a new venue with nicely priced drinks for NYC (eg $7 wine glass) and the food looked yummy. The wide room with spaced out tables wasn't so good for building audience energy. Nigel suggested people move to the center, and there was nervous laughter from the dark corners of the room.
