I am presently working on a gothic novel and it shows. There is definitely a lot of Mazzy Star-inspired psychedelia on my list this time. Have any of you listened to Amy Kuney yet? I will as soon as my emusic downloads refresh. http://www.myspace.com/amykuney To my ears she sounds like a poppy Fiona Apple or, perhaps more accurately, like Sara Bareilles with the prominent piano-playing and sultry vocals. BROOKE WAGGONER: Fresh Pair of Eyes http://www.myspace.com/brookewaggoner Try "Hush if You Must" for the most gorgeous, up tempo piano-playing pared with an accelerating, happy melody. I have listened to this artist non stop since I stumbled upon her second album on emusic in August. She doesn't exactly sound like anybody else, but whenever I'm listening to her I am reminded of my first encounter with Regina Spektor. It's probably the quirkiness and playful approach to songwriting. Brooke is more of a cabaret artist, though. FRIDA HYVVNEN: Silence is Wild http://www.myspace.com/fridahyvonen Try the very explicit "Once I Was a Serene." It's from her debut album, but her newest songs aren't up on myspace yet. I love this Swedish artist. She's in your face, her lyrics are nailing down what it's like to be a young woman, and her voice is a gorgeous mix of power and sensitivity. Woman Power if there ever was one :-) THE PIERCES: Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge http://www.myspace.com/thepierces Try "Boring" for the hilariously blasi lyrics. If you're into CocoRosie and/or Tegan & Sara you'll most likely dig this. Quite quirky and fast-paced with some killer-choruses. Definitely infectious. KIRA LYNN CAIN: Kira Lynn Cain http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=796 6225 Try "White as a Dove". If Sia decided to do a soundtrack for Twin Peaks this is how it would sound. I'm not crazy about the whole disc as Kira Lynn Cain is pretty much singing the same song over and over again. But I like the overall feel of the album and her voice is just right for the material. SARABETH TUCEK: Sarabeth Tucek http://www.myspace.com/sarabethtucek Try my favourite song this year,"Stillborn", as well as "Holy Smoke". Sarabethss voice is often and rightfully compared to that of Nico and Aimee Mann. This debut album is certainly in my top ten this year. I discovered Sarabeth this Spring and have been returning to her album time and again. A real grower with a very distinct sound. Fully orchestrated and slightly psychedelic. JANE WEAVER: Seven Day Smile http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=382 20638 Try "Turning in Circles". A bit psychedelic, a bit folksy, very consistent. Fans of Mazzy Star and Speck Mountain will most likely enjoy this. OTHERS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Emiliana Torrini: Me and Armini (I love this. Have been listening to it all summer) Natalie Walker: With You. (Seems a bit dull, but I loved her debut. Will listen some more.) Tara MacLean: Wake. (Only available for download. Similar to her previous outings which means: excellent.) Jem: Down to Earth (Not as good as Finally Woken, in my opinion. But still a treat with Dido-esque vocals.) Brightblack Morning Light: Motion to Rejoin (mostly instrumental. VERY mellow) All the best, Leonora _________________________________________________________________ Ny Hotmail kommer snart!
