The only one that immediately springs to mind is "Blood of Eden" by Peter Gabriel, which probably doesn't match your criterion. And i just thought of another: "Adam And Eve" by Tim Hart & Maddy Prior. Oh, by the way, there's "Letter to Eve" by the Indigo Girls. The lyrics are quite pedestrian, though ("Oh Eve / where is Adam / I see /you've been kicked / out of the garden..") And because of this thread I have the melodramatic, not so relevant "Eve" by the Carpenters stuck in my head. How about "Snake" by PJ Harvey? There's no direct mentioning of Eve, but PJ is impersonating her to great effect: You snake, you crawled between my legs, said:"Want it all? It's yours, you bet.I'll make you queen of everything. No need for god, no need for him.Just take my hand, you'll be my bride.Just take that fruit, put it inside." You snake, you dog, you fake, you liar,I burned my hands, I'm in the fire. You salty dog, you filthy liar:My heart, it aches, I'm in the fire. You snake, I ate a true belief,That rotten fruit inside of me. In the never ending collapse of he record business, as it was known... How do you now define an indie artist? Original or highly creative talent? Self employed via concerts, web/CD music sales, owns label and/or publishing? What happens when they have a publishing deal? Publishing deals vary. Could just be to help exploit the writers music in all markets...say like Patty Grifin or could be to do primarily co-writer deals for songs that get farmed out to any artist or commercial use....where producers want say a song for a commercial that sounds like the Beatles but will not cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars.... You know, there are all these sort of hack songwriters or copy cat writers who crank out formula songs that get sold for cheap cos getting the original music from the real artists costs too much.... The hack writers at best never graduate beyond being opening acts and can't draw much of a crowd live....have no radio hits and are essentially, not established artists with a public following in the real world of any note. Myspace attracts a million moochers, but can help sell CD's and getting the word out on promising new talent such as The Paper Raincoat or Lelia Broussard who have and will go on to continued successful indie careers......live, CD sales, Digital Sales, positive reviews, youtube video hits and so on. Then, there is the indie artist who gets discovered on myspace and gets a song licensed for $1,000 to $10,000 to some TV show.... That is a corporate gig. Often they will promote the TV show on their myspace or in any of their press.... Most of these artists may be immature - still copping other peoples styles and are not original mature artists - so - they fill a niche cos they are cheap, will let their music go to any show, and may sound like they are trying to ape a Dylan harmonica riff...and....as Dylan would be too much money or would never allow their music to be used on such and such a show...they get the slot on X reality show or TV drama. Is that an indie artist? Once in awhile, they break out like Jem did and have huge radio and concert success after having a song on Grey's Anatomy...but she was already, from the demo stage, a huge favorite at KCRW and came from a very cool indie background as a DJ and promoter and indie label owner....she came out of the electronica culture in the UK... a real scene and a unique talent. So, getting a song on Grey's Anatomy helped catapult her....but....she already was on fire...just hadn't broke out yet. Others remain like songwriters, the poormans Beatles or whatever.... SO.... I know...it's messy out there.... But, real talent catches on fire in all markets. Look at Feist. She is huge now but hasn't sold out. She is still an evolving totally wonderful artist....and unique....besides being a great guitarist... And then, most of the artists that are considered Ecto..... Are they not indie artists? They don't make their primary living selling music to TV shows. Right? They are original artists. Like, Issa. Ok, Jane Siberry sold a song for a big Barney movie... but good for those kids to be exposed to her and I don't think she was aping Judy Collins or Joni Mitchell when she did it. She how things shift. I think for me, indie artist boils down to integrity and artistry issues. It is possible to maintain both and have a major label or publishing deal. Sometimes..... But those little guys that are writing in their bedrooms and/or nick hooks and formulas off established acts and sell to TV etc....I think, freelance songwriters might be more accurate, unless they have a publishing deal....and then, they are writers who crank out whiskey commericals. Now...some TV shows and commericals are high end and they do use incrediable new music (Nick Harcourt from KCRW and others do work as music supervisors for commercials, films. etc.) and those are the ones who place songs where someone will come by the list here and go "who's that on the Jetta commercial?" and then, there are great films.....and lots of these have bigger budgets, really good casts, or are about some cutting edge fab thing (usually, cars)...and high production values rule...and....they use really talented often times, established music by KNOWN ARTISTS. So, I think what I am tripping over is Indie and Artist. Indie is pretty much a grey area these days.... It doesn't really mean anything as it's a catch-all term for everyone that doesn't what....have a major record deal? Most people don't have major deals these days. Then, you've got the hack songwriters with a publishing deal who get songs on things like Paris Hilton's show and toot their horns as Indie Artist's but really have no following....and just pollute the term, Indie Artist. Really, I just think it has become SO overused ....it's lost it's meaning, I do think people who cop other peoples styles, sell songs for cheap to any show that asks for them, can't headline or has to be an opening act and has no real following....aren't indie artists. They survive on corporate money and they lack performance skills or any number of things that will prevent them from becoming established indie artists....you know, with great word of mouth, a wonderful following, able to headline, and so on. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what others think as I recognize with the collapse of the record business, it's all gotten to be much more of a messy soup out there.... and with the downturn in economics..... I am sure most of us are more picky now in who we will support.....right? I am going to focus on artists who maintain their own original integrity.... Emily B, Imogen Heap, Rachael Sage....Patty Griffin.....Kate Bush. Indie to me means....individual artistic integrity. Oh, speaking of which.... www.myspace.com/mazzystar68 Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star has been collaborating with Massive Attack... Remember when Tracey Thorn from EBTG did on "Protection" Exactly.... And, David Roback - the musical half of Mazzy Star has been preparing a new Mazzy Star album, I think due in 2010. Mazzy Star was of course, the groundbreaking original shoe gaze band. They have no hype machine, no bio, no anything going on but pictures and songs on their myspace.... Haven't had an album out for over 10 years. Player gets over 10,000 myspace plays a day. I think when it comes down to a litmus test...for artistic integrity, Mazzy Star is at the top of the tree... And, of course, I am positively really excited about the new material....just thrilled! Anyway, sorry to ramble so but the business has been changing so much and continues to evolve and defining artists has become more challenging....and, it is fascinating to follow... Oh, nad then there are the ones who start off indie and sellout....like....Jewel. I guess thatis the big version of an indie selling out, yes? - the same thing but on a wee small scale are the ones who just sellout to TV shows... I think they are in a class of their own.. I don't consider them indies. freelanceers at best, corporate suck ups at worst. What do you think? Has this sort of stuff been bugging anyone else? I just think there has been such a breakdown and the consumers will have more of a role in the future as the money gets tighter....in sorting the wheat from the chaff...
