Welcome to ecto, Millicent! - --Neile ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2008 14:43:26 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: Emily Bezar - Exchange and other recent albums Emily Bezar - Exchange I think Tim's original review nailed it. Exchange is a gorgeous and complex album, not as easy to get into as Angels' Abacus (and even that album took me a while), and I still don't think I've listened to it enough to comment on it meaningfully. But I will say it feels like it takes off from AA, like Emily was expanding her boundaries, pushing herself further. It's more jazzy, and there are places where she really lets the band go. Jonatha Brooke - The Works I'm not familiar with Woody Guthrie's work, but I love this album. A bit of a different sound for Jonatha, which I can't quite describe. Maybe that it's more rooted in organic American styles like folk, blues, and gospel. Shades of these. At any rate, I like it far better than her last solo album, the disappointing Careful What You Wish For. It wasn't an immediate love, but it grew on me quickly. Emmylou Harris - All I Intended to Be Another lovely album. Kind of similar to 2003's _Stumble into Grace_, but hearkens back to her early country days more. Emiliana Torrini - Me and Armini My favorite of the recent fall releases. Very quirky and eclectic. Joan Osborne - Little Wild One Quickly growing on me. At first I thought the individual songs were good but the album lacked cohesiveness as a whole. Now that's changed. Either that or I don't mind so much. At any rate, it's nice to see Joan getting back into original music more in the vein of her debut Relish. Dar Williams - Promised Land Promised Land doesn't have the unevenness of _My Better Self_ but it doesn't really have any standout songs either. Overall, it's a nice, solid album, which is probably another way of saying it doesn't do much for me. Sad because I'm a longtime fan. Hopefully it will grow on me with more listens. Juliana Hatfield - How to Walk Away I had a couple of Juliana's early albums but haven't followed her career. I got interested again after hearing about her new memoir (though I haven't read it yet). At any rate, How to Walk Away is a real treat. It's more pop, not as guitar-driven (though that crunchy sound appears in places). Vonda Shepard - From the Sun A nice surprise as I didn't know she was releasing a new album. Better yet, it's a good one, better than 2002's Chinatown. She goes for some of the same funkiness she went for on that album (Chinatown), but she pulls it off better here. There are some stumbles (mainly in a few grimace-inducing lyrics), but there's also a lot of fun, and the simply orchestrated piano ballads shine. Her usual vocal affectations probably won't win her any new fans, but this album might just win back old ones. Jem - Down to Earth Lots of fun. Not quite up there with her debut, but very nearly as good and there's more stylistic variation. It's mostly upbeat trip-hop pop with a few slower songs (as on her debut). But she's far more eclectic here. Latin, gospel, hip-hop and banjos, for example. But for the most part, it really works. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue I've only gotten to listen to this once, but it's quite promising. More of an alt-country feel than Rabbit Fur Coat, I think. There are definitely some songs I really like. However, i do have the Borders edition of the new Joan Osborne (which evidently includes a Borders-exclusive bonus track) on order. The most recent CD i bought was the "Wall-E" soundtrack, which is delightful!
