I feel that Richard Wright was brilliant musician and inventive keyboard player that added so much to the atmosphere of the Pink Floyd sound. He seemed like a really genuine person and nice guy in all of the interviews that I had seen him. Anyway, I have no idea if they will or can replace him for live shows. David has pretty much focused on his solo career this decade. Anyone have any new news on Jon Anderson's health? On the off chance this helps you be sure to actually *VOTE*, here's a little helpful tool someone just pointed out to me: https://www.voteforchange.com/ ok, back to music. - --jessica n.p. squeeze - five live (I went to see them this weekend and I must say, wow, I am so happy I did, they did not disappoint. 1) they played all their old hits so we were 'satisfied' from that perspective. 2) the non-hits they did were pretty good too, 3) the new guys they have on drums & keyboards were awesome, especially the keyboardist, Stephen Large. He was amazing! http://www.myspace.com/lordlarge 4) Most importantly I think, they had a *great* time, they were having FUN making music, and it really set the entire tone of the night. I can't recommend this recording I'm listening to right now, really. You'd be better off listening to the old studio recordings. But they are super fun live. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2008 22:52:06 -0700 From: jessica spurling Subject: Re: politics & voting & music (and squeeze) jessica spurling wrote: > I don't want to introduce a political discussion to ecto. On the off chance this > helps you be sure to actually *VOTE*, here's a little helpful tool > someone just pointed out to me: https://www.voteforchange.com/ > Hey everyone, I want to apologize for sending that link out without researching it more first. First of all, I did *NOT* intend my email to suggest or request that anyone vote for Obama. The site was referred to me as a tool to register to vote, check your voter registration, and find your polling place. I remember missing voting a few times when I first moved to San Francisco, because I wasn't sure if the DMV forms meant I was really registered, I didn't know where my polling location was, I wasn't sure how to find out, and I didn't have it in me back then, to figure it all out. If someone had at the time said 'this web site will simply do all of that for you', I'd have used it and voted. (such things did not exist at the time in '94). I regret every single time in my life that I didn't vote, and when I saw a tool that might help folks I thought I should pass it on, and I'd spent the afternoon talking about DRM and music rights with a friend at work, so I thought of ecto and I thought, I hope all ectophiles vote. I honestly did not realize at the time that this site is part of the Obama campaign, and I apologize to anyone I've offended. I realize now that 'vote for change' is the Obama campaign slogan (or one of them anyway), but since I basically get *no* public media in my life, I honestly didn't recognize it earlier. I'm sure you'll find this ridiculous, but I don't watch TV (ever, anywhere), and I get all of my news from KQED/NPR, The Onion (for the A/V Club and local entertainment news), and the results of targeted web queries. Lame I am sure, but whatever, that's who I am. So when I saw the site earlier today I thought it was a generic 'voter' oriented thing. No, I didn't scroll down to the bottom of the page at the time and notice the "Paid for by Obama for America" at the bottom. MOST IMPORTANTLY: I did *NOT* find out whether or not the information you enter is stored and used in ANY way that could violate your personal privacy. Voter records are public information in the US, so if you are registered to vote, your name and address are already listed publicly. However, this site does NOT state anywhere that I can see whether or not your information will be stored and/or used in other ways. *Email addresses* are not normally collected in voter registration records, and are likely being collected here. I've submitted a question on the site asking them to point me at a privacy statement or other use statement describing how the private information they collect will be used. Sooooooo. I guess unless you're an Obama supporter who doesn't care if the Obama campaign has and uses your email address in any way you like, you might want to not use that site to register/check your registration/check your polling place. (Note that all of the campaigns already have access to whatever data you have given on your voter registration if you are a registered voter, and as far as I can tell the only thing aside from name/email address that this site asks for is your email adderss). I suspect there better non-partisan sites that do the same thing. If I happen to find one, I'll send that on. In the meanwhile, I rescind the referral to the site, and I'd like to thank the ectophile who brought this to my attention. I *don't* rescind my request that you all vote. :) And no, I'm not assuming that all ectophiles will vote the same way. I did not intend my email to be an unsolicited 'vote for obama' plug. If we're in an actual discussion of politics and I"m asked, I'll be happy to tell you who I'm voting for and why. But I'm not the sort to simply advertise for someone. And yeah, I feel a little bit taken advantage of, but of course it's my own fault for being so clueless and out of the media, and for not looking closely at the site. - --jessica ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #604 ***************************
