Whilst I do enjoy her music, it's her lyrics that really do it for me. And she does continue to develop them. (Anybody else remember a very early song with the internal rhyme 'Texaco in New Mexico'? :) "Echoes", on the last album, disappointed me in terms of the lyrics, but there are other songs on that album that demonstrate her lyrical progression. (And I can't blame her for wanting to have a hit.) But then I first heard "February" back in 1993 (before it was recorded on Razor and Tie), and those lyrics just grabbed hold of me and haven't let go yet. :) Ellen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2008 15:07:42 -0400 From: "Aly-Neil Fields" Subject: Re: New Dar Williams Ellen, I can relate! I remember when I first heard "As Cool As I Am" on an internet radio program. First, the song is super catchy... but the lyrics really hit me. Clever and with a message I could really appreciate at the time as a budding feminist! I like Dar, I don't think she's the greatest ever, but I'll be damned if she can't write a good song. I saw them supporting Aimee in NYC, and they were adored by much of the audience. I swung back and forth between "this is cute and pretty and quirky and makes me want to hug puppies and dance through a field of tulips" to "this is cutesy and too pretty and makes me want to strangle puppies and trample tulips." It helped that they were genuine - Blake is obviously like that rather than just playing adorable and precocious. She seemed full of delight. Reminded me of quirky cute perky stuff like Frente. Somewhat Two loons for tea-ish as well. Aimee was good too, but I don't enjoy her mellower side as much. Will stick to concerts when she's promoting rawk albums. Or playing solo acoustic (does she ever?), just not the middle stuff!
