Blew me away with a rocking performance of "How Am I Different?" and an encore which concluded with a kickass version of "Deathly." I'm not promising a full length review (yet)... right now I'd like to call your attention to The Submarines, who were her opening act. They're a husband and wife duo and are incredibly adorable. Blake Hazard is the female singer (you all may be familiar with her) and her husband is John Dragonetti/Jack Drag. They aren't quite ecto, but they do play pretty, sweet (twee, really), and sometimes dreamy, always catchy pop music. They have two albums, which my friends and I snatched up at the merch stand. They are well worth seeking out and supporting, as they do a great live show too, and you can tell they are really happy to do what they do - Blake was adorable. Is anyone else a fan of them? - -- NP: "The Thorn Thicket," The Submarines. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2008 03:57:06 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: New Dar Williams And this, from Amazon.com on Dar's new one, "The Promised Land" : "...12 reflective songs that introduce a new Pop sound for Dar Williams". Hmmm. "A new pop sound for Dar Williams". Those very words chill the soul. Ellen, who has the new CD on order regardless. :) (I first saw Dar live back in '93, so I'm a lifer. :) Mass Live writes: Dar Williams, "Promised Land" (Razor & Tie) 3 stars. A wonderful lyric writer, whose limited musical vision has held her back in recent years, Dar Williams does - mercifully - branch out a bit on this, her first album in three years. With guest contributions from the likes of Marshall Crenshaw and Suzanne Vega, there's a heartland feel to some of "Promised Land," from the organic instrumentation that helps drive "It's Alright," to the bigger sound of "The Easy Way" and "Go to the Woods." It definitely helps make up for Williams' predictable melodies and helps remind one of the immense talent that she showed in her early masterworks like "Mortal City" and "End of the Summer." Williams does turn in a couple of intriguing covers as well, including her version of Fountains of Wayne's "Troubled Times," and a particularly riveting "Midnight Radio," the latter which was culled from the film musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." New York Daily News - -- Dar Williams "Promised Land": More literate work from one of our most thoughtful singer-songwriters, with promising cameos from Marshall Crenshaw and Gary Louris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Sep 2008 09:24:39 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: New Dar Williams Hi, Adam Kimmel wrote: > Hmmm. FWIW, about 10 minutes after that press release went out, Dar had it changed to remove that phrase b/c she didn't feel it was accurate. Obviously Amazon never got the revised memo.:} From what I've heard of the record, it's pretty much in line with _My Better Self_ and the general direction she's been moving in lately. Umm, I'm out of touch, I guess. What's this talk of Dar's "limited musical vision","predictable melodies", and "immense talent that she showed in her early masterworks"? It sounds like people think her career has been on trending downhill for the past decade or so. Is this true? I own EofS and think it's marvelous, and have heard a few of her subsequent CDs and liked them. I think she does have a limited musical vision. She does write conventional melodies, and I don't think she's capable of writing anything else. She already has lived up to what potential she has, which I find makes every additional release less necessary for me to hear. Perfectly good records, but one or two is enough for me. This is the first time I've heard Sasha, despite lots of pushing by Ishrat over at Caffe Vivaldi. It was a small audience in a small space--Sunday night residency not being the greatest audience draw, I suppose--with a small terrier running around the stage during the set. The music was pleasant and sometimes better than that; Steve Elliot's electric guitar sometimes added a bit of ecto-ish feel. The freaky thing that happened was afterwards, after I was making my way back to the subway entrance, walking along the deserted access road under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. A little Honda element pulls up to ask directions. The person in the passenger seat rolls down the window and recognizes me... it's Deanna Kirk. Who runs into an ectophilic musician at 10pm on a Sunday night under the BQE? This one goes right up there next to the time I ran into Susan McKeown in my neighborhood the morning after I'd seen her perform. Of course, I have no idea how to get anywhere in that neighborhood, so I was no good at giving directions. But I did find out that she's performing at Small's Jazz Club on Wednesday, Sept. 17th--apparently I'm no longer receiving her email announcements, which is why God had to send her out in a car to find me. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #597 ***************************
