I remember an actor/musician I knew who used to adjust Billy Joel's "Honesty" to "Sodomy". With hilarious results. His record "I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I've Caused" is well worth seeking out. I am sad. So... I am coming to new york soon, to go to the MBV show/weekend thing, All Tomorrow's Parties, in upstate new york. Oh my goodness, look at this lineup. *FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 19TH - DON'T LOOK BACK* THURSTON MOORE PERFORMING PSYCHIC HEARTS ; TORTOISE PERFORMING MILLIONS NOW LIVING WILL NEVER DIE ; MEAT PUPPETS PERFORMING MEAT PUPPETS II ; BUILT TO SPILL PERFORMING PERFECT FROM NOW ON ; BARDO POND PERFORMING LAPSED ; PATTON OSWALT ; EUGENE MIRMAN ; MARIA BAMFORD ; JOE DEROSA ; *SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20TH - CHOSEN BY ATP* FUCK BUTTONS ; LOW ; GROWING ; EDAN WITH GUEST DAGHA ; SHELLAC ; THEE SILVER MOUNT ZION ORCHESTRA ; THE DRONES ; POLVO ; WOODEN SHJIPS ; HARMONIA ; OM ; AUTOLUX ; APSE ; ALEXANDER TUCKER ; LES SAVY FAV ; LIGHTNING BOLT ; *SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21ST - CHOSEN BY MY BLOODY VALENTINE* MY BLOODY VALENTINE DINOSAUR JR. ; LILYS ; YO LA TENGO ; MERCURY REV ; MOGWAI ; LE VOLUME COURBE ; BOB MOULD ; SPECTRUM ; GEMMA HAYES ; THE WOUNDED KNEES ; BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE ; ROBIN GUTHRIE ; EPMD ; ....AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD ; So, the sad part is, I bought 4 tickets (and a room that sleeps 6!) - the other two are for friends of ours that got married this year, as a wedding gift for them. Yes, it'd been discussed in advance and yes they really wanted to go (well, they still *want* to), and they were thrilled to have the trip as a wedding present. Well, for ridiculously annoying reasons having to do with the US government holding onto all of our friend Adam's valid/current photo ID for a little while longer (long story having to do with his overstaying his student visa (he's from the bahamas)... anyway, so, he can *legally travel by plane in the US* but apparently doing so is unbelievably traumatic as a recent trip to Chicago revealed. They are unwilling to go through another TSA experience. So I've got two tickets to All Tomorrow's Parties. And a room that sleeps 6. Happy to sell the tickets to whomever. Even *happier* to sell them to two people I'd be happy to share a room with. And perfectly happy, for the right people, if you wanted to buy your own ticket and share our room. Woj? Meth? Jeff? Any other east coasters? (Or people willing to travel!) :) I am so looking forward to this trip!! Maybe even if you're not able to go to the show if you're available while we're out there (we'll be out there the week after the show for various visitings and fun things), let me know, maybe we can meet up. - --jessica ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Sep 2008 17:51:34 -0700 From: jessica spurling Subject: Re: Profanity mix (also, touring funding costs etc.) The Asylum Street Spankers have a few EPs with songs that you would want on any profanity mix, though they'll contribute to the levity side of things, not the 'anger' side of things. See "Dirty Ditties", "Nasty Novelties", "Pussycat". [BTW, for those of you who might like the Spankers if you knew you'd be free from dirty drugs and sex references and profanity of any sort (i remember once someone warning against seeing them due to the 'naughty' nature of some of their songs), you can safely check out "mommy says no!", a recent kids album they did, which is really great! And yes, safe for kids.] And for the profanity colelction, I wonder if you wouldn't also want to include something from the band Fuck, just .. given the band name. Their music isn't offensive or profane. I quite like them. I saw them live a couple of years ago, bought one of the CDs (I have Cupid's Cactus). They're nothing ectophilic but I like 'em. Kinda mellow. Really, *really* good live, just very competent musicians making some very good music. Oddly the impression they gave was that they were all amazing musicians from other bands moonlighting secretly on this little side project they just liked to get together to do. Which isn't the case (as far as i know anyway!) , but is just the *feel* of it, if that makes any sense. They seemed not to be taking anything too seriously, aside from playing some good music together for the pure joy of it. It was lovely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuck_(band) Regarding both the Asylum Street Spankers mentioned in this email, and the cost of touring mentioned in a recent thread, the Spankers, who've been a nearly non-stop-touring band for the last 12 years I've known them, have just announced that they can now barely break even on a tour, and they're giving it up with no particular plans to ever start it up again. Not that they're saying "never again". Sure, things could change in the future with the economy of touring and the economy of the US and the price of gas. Sure. But as things stand, no more Spankers on tour. This is absolutely my favorite band to see live, ever, and I'm going to miss them a ton. They're still planning to make music together and play in the Austin area where they're from, so maybe this means I'm going to be making yearly trips to Austin and I won't be too sad after all. - --jessica ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Sep 2008 18:12:19 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: Profanity mix (also, touring funding costs etc.) anyone have any favorite limericks? :- ) Cheers Birdie ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #593 ***************************
