Today's Subjects: ----------------- Guardian article, Canadian govt.funding ["Allison Crowe Music" Subject: Guardian article, Canadian govt.funding With respect to the Guardian article, one on hand, it seems incredible that any article that touches on "confessional" singer-songwriters could entirely omit mention of Joni Mitchell, her album Blue and more... On the other hand, it's Joni who's called such major label products/acts cited in the article as "style inventions". Bringing Joni into the discussion could have blown the entire thesis. In Canada, the bulk of the touring funds for folks such as Veda Hille comes from Canada Council and FACTOR programs. There's no indication those sources have changed. And, there's other specific programs that those who use the grant system can continue to tap. So, there may not be great cause for alarm, depending on what acts you favour. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 03:41:18 -0700 From: "Allison Crowe Music" Subject: Re: Guardian article, Canadian govt.funding p.s. Canadians, like many people today, have reason to be alarmed about political agendas in their home country and beyond, but, music, thankfully, will continue to flow from Canuck artists - on record and on tour! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 11:47:50 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: Guardian article, Canadian govt.funding i think the need for grants grows significantly with inflation and the cost of fuels... and, as those two things keep rising, so does the need for additional funding, resources, carpooling, etc Issa did not sell out all her shows in Los Angeles - 2 out of 3, and the one that didn't was at the Alterknit - I think a bungle of publicity issues were at the core - and - it was her first appearance here as Issa....and that was before gas went up and everything else followed. I love that Joni is still considered canadian even tho she has been a proud and happy californian for more than 40 years. Canadians need a good livingroom curcuit to give them shelter and warmth along tour routes.... In the smaller cities and towns between the urban areas.... I'm sure things will develop to fill in the gaps... I'm not sure how much is needed to break even for singer/songwriter solo tours these days... but, the price at the pump and the market is bad enough for just everyday people making everyday trips to work and feeding themselves and family, and most people are cutting back on their spending. Back in the day, people would skip meals to pay for the next LP by whoever...ok lets say The Who...haha...but now no one needs to skip any meals to pay for music they can go download it for free somewhere. in SO many ways, it isn't the same ball game anymore... Time for the livingroom curcuits to get fired up - and not just for canadians, me thinks.
