Bottom line is this... Great talent that touches people and can connect with communities will survive real ones is what has always been - and is what will last.... not some cheeseball sleezy hard to navigate time sucking place/community like Second Life... which is where i think where all fakesters went and died. Music is still about real instruments and real players and real heart and real soul and getting out there to connect with real people.... The digital thing has been some sort of mad distraction. Radio isn't going away - TV is....going more online...digital....breaking down.. The Feist's, Pacifika's, and Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings (AND their totally boss LP's and singles) are gonna be around.... Nettwerk's myspace page went abandoned a year ago or more....I visited it once and 3 months later - no one had still logged in...just dead in the water last summer....and that was the big year they went digital. Maybe it's back but....anyone signing to a record deal these days is doing themselves a diservice. I hope Miranda Lee Richards has a core group of artist and professional friends that will pitch in and help her out and she has a contract that will work for her.... Good distribution, digitally and in the real world is key....and there is all kinds of companies that do that.... If she has friends that are amateurs and lack focus or talent....that will hurt her (as anyone)... The most important thing is having great players, great art, honest promotion (boy, sucker people with hype when moneys tight and hehe, that's a bad taste in peeps mouths that will not leave) and great songs! Executed well.... Hey...Has anyone been able to see The Paper Raincoat at the Bowery Ballroom??????? Full report please!! They are wonderful and are exactly the sort of artists I expect to succeed.... a wonderful window for the real deal has opened up these days.... I guess, Nettwerk may survive as a super scaled down management company. Dap Tone Records, on the otherhand, is on a roll!!!!! Alas, I was out of town so didn't get to the show. woj went, though, and I hear it was nifty. I just found out they are doing their first headlining gig at Joe's Pub on the 27th of this month (NYC ectophiles, take note :), so I'm pretty sure I'll be going to that. > They are wonderful and are exactly the sort of artists I expect to > succeed.... They really are. And I have faith that Amber and Alex have seen enough of da biz that they won't jump into any stupid deals. (Amber has already survived signing to a label that pretty much disappeared into the ether before it actually released her record.) I can't recommend their EP highly enough. Listening to it you realize just what a genius producer and arranger Alex Wong is ... which has me positively *salivating* in anticipation of Vienna Teng's new album, since he is producing that too. My favorite Kate CD is "Hounds of Love". It is very creative, intelligent, and passionate and yet still is quite accessible. I really like The Dreaming too. But I find it a little bit more left of center and avant garde. That is why some people probably adore it. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Steve VanDevender Sent: Wednesday, August 13, 2008 8:53 PM To: Ecto Subject: Re: Kate Bush in the bathroom robert bristow-johnson writes: > i'll just have to listen to KaTe more often wherever. i never got > Aerial yet (although i expected to when it came out). i only have > that Hounds of Love reissue (with the extra tracks at the end). > > actually i hadn't really looked into KaTe before i read her name in > the liner notes of The Keep. i'm such a Phillistine. I'm thinking back to the days when I was on Love-Hounds and anyone expressing such an unenthusiastic opinion of KaTe there would get an erudite flaming from IED and maybe the threat of having the truck with the 50,000 watt speaker system parked in front of your house playing _The Dreaming_ at you at top volume until you achieved enlightenment. There's less of the pseudo-religious fervor for Kate here in Ecto but I think you'll find she still comes highly recommended. _Aerial_'s well worth having; Kate took forever making it but obviously lavished a lot of craftsmanship on it. Among Kate Bush fans there seems to be a vigorous debate about whether _The Dreaming_ or _Hounds of Love_ is her best album.
