However, when I went off to the rest room, the sounds of "Sunset" were clear and distinct inside the tiled room. The acoustics were fabulous--I'll have to listen to Kate in the bathroom more often. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 08:16:44 -0500 From: CollectedSounds Subject: Re: Who is this man? Hey all, speaking of guys who look nothing like we remember, have you seen Matthew Sweet lately? He looks great on his website, but this (see link) looks nothing like him. There's a video and the song is definitely the Matthew I know (and love). I am looking forward to his new release. http://stereogum.com/archives/video/new-matthew-sweet-live-video-byrdgirl-acoustic_013871.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 22:54:11 -0400 From: "robert bristow-johnson" Subject: Re: Kate Bush in the bathroom > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Paul Blair" > To: Ecto > Subject: Kate Bush in the bathroom > Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 08:38:08 -0400 > > > Yesterday I was having lunch in a fairly nice restaurant in the > Village; because of the noise in the room and the low volume of the > sound system I didn't notice that they were playing Aerial. I wish I'd gotten to it earlier. It's one of my all-time favorite albums by anybody, ever. What a tour de force! You sometimes hear a fan of, say, Margo Timmins insist that they'd pay admission to hear her sing the phone book, but here you get to put such fantasies to the test--and you realize that yes, it is worth it to hear Kate sing a hundred and fifty digits of pi. Or rhapsodize on a washing machine. Or gush about her son. Or carry on a hysterical conversation with a bird. It's amazing. I didn't even know it was coming out! I've been out of the Sarah loop for a while. Was really into her for a long time but Afterglow just didn't do much for me. The new single is from her upcoming greatest hits and is available at the Nettwerk store for everyone or at iTunes Canada. I liked it. It's not up there with the best Sarah songs, but it had some heart and the emotion wasn't totally glossed away. Has anyone else heard it? What did you think? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 20:52:54 -0700 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: Re: Kate Bush in the bathroom robert bristow-johnson writes: > i'll just have to listen to KaTe more often wherever. i never got > Aerial yet (although i expected to when it came out). i only have > that Hounds of Love reissue (with the extra tracks at the end). > > actually i hadn't really looked into KaTe before i read her name in > the liner notes of The Keep. i'm such a Phillistine. I'm thinking back to the days when I was on Love-Hounds and anyone expressing such an unenthusiastic opinion of KaTe there would get an erudite flaming from IED and maybe the threat of having the truck with the 50,000 watt speaker system parked in front of your house playing _The Dreaming_ at you at top volume until you achieved enlightenment. There's less of the pseudo-religious fervor for Kate here in Ecto but I think you'll find she still comes highly recommended. _Aerial_'s well worth having; Kate took forever making it but obviously lavished a lot of craftsmanship on it. Among Kate Bush fans there seems to be a vigorous debate about whether _The Dreaming_ or _Hounds of Love_ is her best album. I think I go back and forth between them myself. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 23:52:11 -0400 From: morayati@email.unc.edu Subject: Re: New Sarah Mclachlan - U Want Me 2 My first reaction - I'll admit it - was a cringe at the title. But the song isn't bad by any means. Compilations tend to irritate me, as do iTunes downloads, so not sure if it'll make it to my playlist. If it does, I just might spell out that title... - -Sarah Quoting Jon Wesley Huff : > I just heard this song. I didn't even know it was coming out! I've > been out of the Sarah loop for a while. Does anybody know just how bad Nettwerk has imploded??? I mean, they tried that "all digital" idea - using lots of online "contests" and other tacky (often rigged or screwed by bots) marketing devices and not selling CD's, as their hopes of digging themselves out, last year - and... that failed, so they were bought out by a UK concert/management company (right?) around November - then, loads of staff were laid off...oh yeah...and artists started deflecting and getting dropped around August (about i think when their financial year ended) cos either they sorted out that Nettwerk wasn't living up to it's contracts (they'd promise CD's shipped to stations like KCRW - when none were ever sent - and - KCRW wanted the artists!!! hello???) and besides radio not being supported - they didn't support for tours and so on....so, some artists got frusterated and made a bunch of attorneys a pile o cash by getting out and others were "dropped".....and from the label and management. I just noticed Uh Huh Her is no longer on Nettwerk as a label or for management.... Something tells me that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (and DapTone Records) will outlive them by decades. Which reminds me, I saw Pacifika, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and Feist at The Hollywood Bowl.... WHAT a triple bill.... all 17,000 seats - packed. Every seat a good one. Excellent sound and visuals. Every player was at the top of their game....100 % professional, wonderful, inspiring and....yeah.. Electrifing .... Anyone else get to see Sharon Jones live? Uh huh...abit like watching james brown, bette midler, and tina turner all rolled into one... If there was a roof, she would have blown it off.... Talent like that is rare, indeed... Feist had these totally wonderful artists (women) who did live projected finger painting on glass plates, enlarged behind her... You know - She is a really good guitarist, and has *quite* the collection of axes she plays.... Pacifika was new to me - latin jazz-fusion band from Vancouver - I highly recommend them!!! I have been dealing with a hand injury and I have to say - that show was the highlight of my year, so far. Part of the KCRW Summer Festival at The Bowl series....I think I want a season ticket for next year. Oh right, so...back to Nettwerk.... I think they lost the plot awhile back...and I am curious to see how what is left of them will whether the next phase of music industry implosion - what with the price of fuel and everything else... I think the artists that will survive these times are the original artists who have a following - on the road - on their websites - iTunes, etc are well connected with other artists (not through industry sources but eachother and the communities they play for...yeah....back to basics in the real world) - have alternative ways of travel - play festivals (not industry ones but real music ones for real people)...and create music that matters to people (not frivilious stupid pop songs)...and are you know....real artists. So, I'm not complaining about the upcoming latest sweep.... I think the ego-driven, self indulgent, copy cat, as deep as an ashtray rock & roll and popsters are in for a big shakedown. It's already started...this new phase.... Rock and Roll stars are going the way of the legendary surfers.... they are from a culture and time that no longer exists and once they are gone...that's it.... Bonnie Raitt, on the otherhand, isn't going anywhere.... Altho, I'd love it if there was someone like her that would come up.... and, I think there is room.... There is always room for artists who speak truths to people and who are passionate about them. This new shakedown, is gonna get rid of more of the fluff..... Keep Supporting the artists you love :-) Oh oh oh...reminds me Thea Gilmour is signed to RYKO Records in the US - Fall release of Liejacker coming up!
