Bet you had some weird-ass dreams, donkeys and grenades. I once put together a mix-CD to lull me to sleep - quiet pieces by Cocteau Twins, Bel Canto, wordless and non-English music - but unfortunately I included 'Effets secondaires' in which Mylene Farmer whispers dreamily (in French) about not being able to sleep, horror films and drugs, which is fine, but then it ends with the extended ringing of an alarm clock. Yeah, alarm clocks really help one sleep. Highlights included Los Straitjackets and Forro in the Dark.. Los sraitjackets started out with a lot of surf rock influences but their palatte has broadened somewhat. They play driving, high energy rock and really got the crowd moving. They said that they will be touring in Canada with vocalist Big Sandy but I really think their strength lies in their instrumental work. Forro in the Dark is a Brasilian group. They play Forro music blended with a variety of other styles and show that you can make highly energetic dance music that is also really interesting just to listen to. They are playing some North American festivals including Globalquerque! Highly recommended! Lucinda Williams was the headliner. I haven't heard anything by her since 2003's World Without Tears and boy was I in for a surprise. Gone is the counrified singer songwriter (for the most part anyway), replaced with a heavy duty rocker. It was mostly amplified guitars and your basic rock drum kit. maybe it was just a case of preconceived expectations but I just couldn't get into it. I thought of Neil Young in his Crazy Horse days but the music just wasn't nearly as compelling. But then again not many songwriters are. The most surprising moment came during the encores. The first was a slow number requested by a couple who had met at the festival 3 years ago and then married there that morning. the second was a propulsive nicely percolating number which unlike most of her set, was not announced by name . The last was a cover of what she called one of the five greatest rock and roll songs ever written. I didn't know it. Turns out to be AC DC's it's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll. boring and generic. I don't remember who on this list said that all songs with the words rock and roll in them suck but this is one of the many (not all) that do. I think that either Lucinda has drank the rock and roll Kool Aid or sold out. If it was the latter, judging by the crowd response, it was a smart business move. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2008 15:33:56 -0400 From: ontario moe Subject: Re: vienna teng one time at band camp, Adam Kimmel (adamk@inbox.com) said: >I'd like to buck the trend, here: I thought Vienna's first album was >good, but thought Warm Strangers was absolutely fantastic -- this is >the one that I (yeah, yeah, IMHO) rate as her best. i agree. i liked the first album well enough but i don't find it very compelling listening. in retrospect, it strikes me the same way that sarah mclachlan's _touch_ does: a gorgeous debut by someone finding their own voice. the second record is much more appealing to me, particularly because its production is a perfect example of how to apply gloss and gleam without distraction or detraction. >But, I agree, that I thought Dreaming Through the Noise isn't all I >hoped it would be. I thought she'd be building up, up, up, but >Dreaming felt a bit too laid back, sometimes to the point of >torpidity. it is laid back, but i still like the record quite a bit. probably even more than the first one, truth be told. also, thank you to whom ever it was who mentioned vienna having an "open tone" to her voice. i don't have the musical vocabulary to describe it but i've always thought of her voice as "plain". that sounds like a bad thing but it's really a compliment since i'm amazed by how pure, clear and unadorned her voice is. i just don't know how to put that into words. still don't. obviously. ;) woj ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2008 20:35:28 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: green river festival/ lucinda williams Hi, bill wrote: > A couple of weeks ago I attended the green river festival in greenfield > mass. not exactly ecto (though apparently erin mckeown played there last > year) Not only did Erin play there last year, but Neko Case too! That's a tough loss anytime, let alone just before one's 50th birthday. I lost my mother a few weeks prior to mine.
