It took me forever to choose the eight tracks to be played. I really wanted to introduce the listeners to some superb ecto-friendly stuff that they most likely didn't know beforehand so now 5.5 million Danes have been listening to Happy Rhodes. Potentially, at least. I even ended up mentioning Ecto on the programme and that is actually the second time for me lately. When recommending great homepages for Danish newspaper Information I mentioned Ecto as well. The recommendation is here: http://www.information.dk/159905 and the radio programme is here: http://www.dr.dk/P1/Serier/Sommergaesten_2008/Udsendelser/20080703123840.htm Both are in Danish, unfortunately. I ended up requesting Black Box Recorder - The New DianaEva Dahlgren - Angeln i rummetTori Amos - Winter Happy Rhodes - TragicOver the Rhine - I Want You to be My LoverSia - Beautiful Calm DrivingMazzy Star - Flowers In DecemberGrey Eye Glances - Angel .. And I'm sorry Noe Venable's Look, Luck didn't make my list. I tried to persuade the producer to include a ninth track but didn't succeed. So far I quite like it. Lots of unexpected twists and turns in the songs that set them apart from standard piano-based stuff. I'm thinking in particular of "Invincible" and "Beloved," although it applies to a lot of the tracks here. I can't really compare it to any of her past work, not having heard it. Maybe that's a good thing. Did I mention that "Beloved" is stunning? Almost hymn-like. Society of Imaginary Friends - Sadness is a Bridge to Love: Definitely the most original debut I've heard this year. Most misleading album cover, too. You look at and think "Hmm, OK, something light, a bit breezy." Not at all. This is dark, cinematic stuff, with a traditional-folk influence. It's also amazingly good. What really sets it apart is classically trained vocalist Louise Kleboe - a mezzo-soprano!. Standout tracks are "Night of Power" - the most traditionally classical song on the album and the one that shows off Louise's tremendous voice to the most effect - and "Flower on the Wall," equal parts folk dance, synthpop, and manic energy. Also: the most purposefully over-the-top ode to social networking websites that will ever be recorded. ("For Those Online.") (Oh, and if anyone here's a fan of Katy Carr, she's name-checked in the liner notes. Yes, the same person. I thought that was cool.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2008 23:48:29 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Two albums Hi, morayati@email.unc.edu wrote: > Rachael Sage - Chandelier: My first Rachael Sage album; I bought it with > Public Record. I'm glad you like it. :) I'm curious what you think of _Public Record_, too. > Did I mention that "Beloved" is stunning? Almost hymn-like. :) That's Rachael's first instrumental on a recording she's released. Featuring, among other things, Noe Venable on ethereal vocal stylings. I quite like it, too (though my personal favorite track on the record is still "Site-Seeing"). (And yeah, I work with Rachael at MPress, but that doesn't disqualify me from remaining a besotted fan, right?? I managed to score the best fangrrl stalker gig ever, really. ;>) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2008 21:42:57 -0700 From: "Allison Crowe Music" Subject: Allison Crowe show rolls from Cambridge to Connecticut Last night's EDAF benefit concert in Cambirdge, MA was a smash. Allison Crowe is now rolling into Connecticut - where the Hartford Advocate has made her concert "Pick of the Week". From the Cambridge performance last night, there's a couple of online comments posted. Here's a quote excerpted from a blog of active Boston podcaster C.C. Chapman: "Last night I got to see one of my all time favorite musical artists perform in a small and intimate concert. That artist is Allison Crowe. I don't remember how I first discovered Allison, but I've been playing her on Accident Hash ever since. Her voice is pure passion and oh so amazing live. I tell anyone who asks to buy her Live at Wood Hall double CD set because while she is amazing in a studio, live she is beyond words." And, Randy Winchester of Arts Somerville wrote: "I have three of Allison's CDs, and I love them, but you just have to be there live to get the full head spinning, spine tingling effect!" The show Saturday night (July 12) in New Britain, CT is a benefit for Trinity-on-Main Arts and Education Centre. Then, it's a fun show at T.O.C. in Philly (July 16) and another benefit for the EveryDay Angels Foundation in NYC (July 19). Hope, Amy, you and more Ectos enjoy this opportunity for music and community! slainte, Ad ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #542 ***************************
