MySpace clips sound really good. Is anyone else going to the show tonight in NYC? It's supposed to have puppets and things and sounds like quite the extravaganza. If I can get a same-day ticket, I'll be there. *Thanks to Adam for the LAURA MARLING review. I've been looking forward to her show tomorrow night and even more so now. Thanks also to her Ectoguide page creator for turning me on to her. *I was glad to see someone mention MARTHA TILSTON here. I stumbled across her in some random but ecto-related way (something related to Laura Marling) and really like her. She makes lovely low-key folk music that I think a lot of people here would like. *Thanks also for the mentions of KATIE STELMANIS and Zunior.com. I got Katie's album, Join Us, there some weeks back and really like it. Sometimes she reminds me of Amanda Palmer (of the Dresden Dolls). Not sure what exactly. Her voice, or the stylings or something. Musically they're not really similar though. *Speaking of THE DRESDEN DOLLS, I'm really enjoying their collection, No, Virginia. Well, except for the "Pretty in Pink" cover; I could have done without that. But overall it's a really strong collection. Some of the songs would have fit perfectly on Yes, Virginia, but that album is great as is, so it's hard to argue with changing it. *While at Zunior.com I picked up LILY FROST's Cine-Magique. It's somewhat uneven, but there are some songs I really, really like, particularly the more theatrical ones. *RACHAEL SAGE's new album Chandelier is a delight. It reminds me most of Illusion's Carnival and Public Record, but then sometimes I think that's only because those 2 records are my favorites (closely followed by Smashing the Serene, closely followed by Painting of a Painting and The Blistering Sun). At any rate, it's really good. It was great to see Rachael live again, and I really enjoyed the sneak preview of some Chandelier tracks, plus kick-ass versions of "Bravedancing" and "Wildflower." *CAMILLE's Music Hole hasn't gotten nearly enough play yet, but it's fun and intriguing. I bought the iTunes version which comes with a bunch of videos of her doing the body percussion you hear on the album. *AIMEE MANN's @#%&*! Smilers is probably the first disappointing album I've gotten in a while. I think I expected something more upbeat and fun, based on the reviews and the 2 tracks I heard in advance - "Freeway" which opens the album and "Ballantines" which closes it. I do like those tracks (though I think "Freeway" is merely good, not amazing), but most of what's in between is pretty boring, with occasional gems like "Columbus Ave." I'm not quite sure why people seem to like this so much better than The Forgotten Arm, which I like rather well as a set of songs, putting aside the concept album bit. I'm trying to keep an open mind about Smilers and hope that with repeat listens it will catch. *Haven't listened much to ALANIS MORISETTE's new one either, but mostly that's because I keep getting stuck on the opening track "Citizen of the Planet" which rocks out, yes, in a way that's similar to SFIJ. That's all for now. Back to work. JoAnn _________________________________________________________________ The im Talkathon starts 6/24/08.
