Amazing how they can fail to spell her name correctly when it's right there on the record cover that they show right under her name Sheesh. Also, they compare her to Tori and Ani? Wha? She sounds like neither to me. But I guess, any press is good press right? Meredith knows this, but for the rest of you, Rachael recently played in Minneapolis and one new fan called her The Jewish Madonna. :) ~Amy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 2008 11:13:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: RE: Finally getting some love from WXPN, Lucy Kaplansky - --- On Sat, 6/14/08, Amy-Collected Sounds wrote: > Amazing how they can fail to spell her name correctly when > it's right there > on the record cover that they show right under her name > Sheesh. Also, they > compare her to Tori and Ani? Wha? She sounds like neither > to me. Actually, I'd compare her to Tori and Ani if I were writing a review (which I should be doing, actually), if only to give readers some idea as to what she's like. However, I'd also explain the differences. (I have notes from that 12 Bar Club show that I keep meaning to type up for a review to send to Rambles... Also have Martha Tilston notes. And Wailin' Jenny notes. And Lucy Kaplansky notes from last night.) About the latter, Lucy Kaplansky played a sold-out show at the Forge, the smaller stage at the Anvil in Basingstoke. The Anvil itself seats about 1400, and I've seen artists such as Richard Thompson, Nanci Griffith, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, the Be Good Tanyas, Kate Rusby, Suzanne Vega etc. there. The Forge is much smaller -- 100 seats. But still, considering Lucy isn't very known here and hasn't appeared over here for a few years (saw her at the Jazz Cafe in London last), the fact that the show sold out quickly was a bonus for her. Apparently, she's doing short tours -- four shows in four nights in the UK this June in order to return home to her daughter quickly. She'll be back here in October, though, for a similar short tour. And she's playing a show closer to home that time, in Fareham, so I'll probably see her again then. Last night's show was rather sporadic in that she didn't have a set list and kind of decided what to play rather impromptu. She was thrilled that there were a lot of requests from the audience and played most of them, including my request for 'Guenivere'. (She also was surprised to hear my American accent and asked what I was doing in England. "Living here," I replied, then another American in the audience called out, "We're everywhere." It turns out there were three ex-pats in the audience last night. ) Next Friday at the same venue: Bella Hardy. Gotta go. Dr Who's on! ;) Ellen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 2008 17:42:08 -0400 From: Gary Davis Subject: Veda Hille Anyone here familiar with Veda Hille? I was going through a box of promos from Rykodisc this past week. Listening to promos can be more of a chore than it sounds. But there's always some gems to be found and her new album - - This Riot Life - was the gem of this batch. The album is released on Andy Partridge's Ape House Records label. Anyone who'd like to check out a soundbite will find one on my Ryko page . Veda Hille is my all-time favourite artist. Her earlier albums are just as amazing as This Riot Life, so I encourage you to check out her back catalogue, only the most recent one is also available through Ape, though. She has a long page on The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music. http://www.ectoguide.org/artists/hille.veda More people need to know about her! The Trajectory email list Meth set up for her should be buzzing. - --Neile On Sat, 14 Jun 2008, Gary Davis wrote: > Anyone here familiar with Veda Hille?
