Of all his ten recordings, I would recommend the first and the last for the most thought-provoking lyrics: Psychedelic Furs self-titled debut (1980) ("See the ceiling raining spit, the beach is backwards, isn't it?") and his solo effort Richard Butler (2006) ("No one will answer you when you call, even when the farthest stars start collapsing back to the beginning and there's no room for heaven".) Amazing stuff. He's an extraordinary painter, too. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jun 2008 11:44:13 -0700 From: "Bill Mazur" Subject: RE: Hello! Welcome to Ecto Amy! All the best! > Thanks! Well, I live in Jersey City, NJ and I am a graphic designer. I met several Ecto people (Ectonians? Ectolites?) when I joined the EveryDay Angels list back in 1995 including Dan Stark who is now one of my best friends (as is Leif of course). I'm a founding member and board member of the EveryDay Angels Foundation which holds the Project Warmth concert series. We collect coats and blankets at shows in the fall and winter. Past participants include Rachael Sage, Allison Crowe, and Jason Mraz. Also, one of Woj and Meth's living room shows was a Project Warmth show a few years ago. As for artists I like, I would say my favorites these days are: Ani Difranco, Randi Driscoll, Goldfrappe, Jason Mraz, Kate Miller-Heidke, Kate Nash, Kinnie Starr, Ellie Lawson, Lindi Ortega, The Noisettes, Megan Slankard, Regina Spektor and Britney Spears (lol, no, just wanted to see if you're still reading!). I also like the Dresden Dolls, Gogol Bordello, Rachael Sage, Sarah Slean, Emaline Delapaix, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, John Mayer, Steve Poltz, KT Tunstall. And Happy, of course. I could keep going but I'll stop now! Not sure if my iPod has more room but I am looking forward to discovering more artists through thi s list. Of course, if I'm not able to win that procrastination medal I may have to unsubscribe. When I get around to it.... ;-) Amy www.edaf.org ********************************************* "All my life I wanted to be someone; I guess I should have been more specific." ~ Jane Wagner ~ ************** Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. In support of new album (pause - Sam had to turn around to check the poster!) 'Don't do anything.' At Columbus Circle she sang toe-tapping 'Can't come down', cute poppy 'Little plastic life", clever 'My career in chemistry', Left Bank Cafe-ish 'Signal,' swinging 'Sister Rosetta goes before us' and one other (crunchy 'Shake it down'?). She plays acoustic guitar, and a guy accompanies her both on distorted guitar and a mini-mini amp, and a violin with horn thing attached. Since her songs are mostly under 3 mins, one looks forward to the proper tour she promises comes later this year. Though the album isn't the pop pleasure of her earlier stuff, nor the rock fun and torment of 'Omnipop', so far I like it much more than 'Fan dance.' No bland enervated sophistication. Lyrics suggest he's pissed at her ex-husband. Brittle guitar, yummy strings, a piano number, mostly pared back naturalistic sounds, and that wise, weary, sardonic voice. K. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jun 2008 23:34:36 +0200 From: Leonora Christina Skov Subject: Colleen, Silje Nes & Joan as Police Woman I expected to be listening to the latest Martha Wainwright (which is brilliant) and the latest Martina Topley-Bird (which is equally brilliant) all June while completing my childrens book here in Berlin. But then I stumbled across Everyone Alive Wants Answers and Les ondes silencieuses by French act Colleen and Real Life and To Survive by Joan as Police Woman while browsing through Berlins best music store on Friedrichstrasse. And Im completely taken aback. Colleen is Cicile Schott and her music is instrumental, Everyone Alive.. is experimental electronica while Les ondes.. is Cicile Schott on viola de gamba, classical guitar, clarinet, crystal glass and the like. The albums have the same sort of weird edgy feel as Mzm and CocoRosie, the melodies linger in my mind, and personally I dont miss the singing one bit. The melodies are really very strong and there are lots of toy-like sounds and sonic textures to keep you amazed. Which reminds me: one of you mentioned Norwegian Silje Nes the other day and Id say her debut, Ames Room, is quite similar to Colleens first outing though Ames Room is folktronica and Silje Nes is singing in a fairly high-pitched voice on it earning her several comparisons to fellow Norwegians Stina Nordenstam and Hanne Hukkelberg. However, Colleen and Silje Nes are both one woman bands and both create their music using laptops, guitar, synth, piano, und so weiter. Also, Silje Nes incorporates a wide range of strange sound effects and her singing seems more like yet another sound effect than actual words. I really like that aspect of her music, but I do find Colleens outings more varied than this. Actually, Ames Room goes on and on and halfway through the songs start to sound alike as if shes reusing the same four or five melodies. Quite a shame. Had she made a tighter set of songs this would definitely have been up there with Colleen. A bunch of people have recommended Joan as Police Woman to me lately and understandably so. Real Life is a gorgeous debut from the ex-girlfriend of Jeff Buckley, Joan Wasser, who has played with anyone from Anthony and the Johnsons to the Scissor Sisters. Her style is dramatic in a mellow and vulnerable way, her voice is quite sultry, you can never predict where the songs are going, and all in all Joan as Police Woman just doesnt sound like anyone else. Thats what I really love about her. Actually, I find this totally mind blowing and on top of it all the production is top notch. Elegantly played and all. Rufus Wainwright and Anthony can even be heard on several tracks. Other great albums at present: Lykke Li: Youth Novels Orenda Fink: Invisible Ones Kaada: Music for Moviebikers Mum: Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy All the best from sunny Berlin, Leonora "I never go outside unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star.
