I'd given up hope of ever hearing her sound this inspired ever again. She's embracing her eccentricity and her muse instead of churning out yet another commercial yawnfest with paint-by-numbers production. Interestingly, something appeared in my e-mailbox that directed me to a Web site called "Cassette From My Ex" (www.cassettefrommyex.com), which is described by one blogger as "a site that allows readers to submit mixtapes from their past, with the story behind it. The tracks are also posted so readers can experience them." Most of what I've seen is not particularly ecto (not at all, in fact), but it's a fun site to explore, and it's amusing to see what people will include on a mix tape. If any of you decide to contribute some of your mixtapes to the site, please let us know so that we can listen to them! Does your new beau know that Leonard Cohen has produced a half dozen books of poetry as well as several other books. Personally I really like his stuff. As for amusing, there are (were?) some artists for whom their whole point was to be amusing. That is to say that the music was mostly just a vehicle for the humor. The Bonzo Dog Band and Martin Mull immediately come to mind. Sometimes her melodies are a little cheesy but the lyrics are quite funny and touching as well. I especially like: Getting in Touch with my Inner Bitch Santa Monica Pier (not funny, but sweet) A Musical Apology (this one has another really long name) What Was I Thinking? I want to make a mix CD of such songs for him but don't really know where to start, so I'm asking my fellow ecto-philes for assistance. He has fairly broad taste in music and among his favorite songs are Kirsty MacColl's "In These Shoes" and anything by Leonard Cohen. I guess he likes amusing lyrics, maybe some sensitive-type lyrics, and I don't know what else. I know this isn't particularly helpful, but can anyone tell me some of your favorite lyrical tunes? I haven't heard anything from it yet, but I read an article in Entertainment Weekly that said it's co-written and produced by Guy Sigisworth (or however you spell that). Also in the article it names artists she likes and there's a little photo and blurb of none other than Sarah Slean. I'm definitely loving the album. I agree it's probably her best since Supposed. I usually found a couple songs on each of the other albums I liked but they weren't nearly as strong as a set. Right now my favorites are probably "Giggling For No Reason." "Tapes." and "Underneath" in that order. I was sort of so-so about X&Y. But Viva La Vida seems a winner so far. I haven't given the end of the album as much play as I need to yet, but the beginning is really great. I'm especially loving Lost and the title track. Anyone else here it? I'll definitely be buying the real version on the first day of sale. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2008 22:10:51 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: Hello! I hate to say it but I am *not* loving this album. It's only been one listen, but I keep thinking how much it sounds like what she's already done. Citizen in particular reminds me of Baba, except during the chorus (not that that's a bad thing...I like Baba). I just expected more I guess. And no, I don't hear a single either...sure, that's not too important, but it helps. I'll probably end up liking it more after a few more spins, but now?
