THUMP THUMP, a metallic heartbeat. THUMP THUMP, the footsteps of the Minotaur (one of the bands upstairs was 'Lair of the minotaur'). A metal listener was outside complaining about the noise when I left. Two Loons singer Sarah joked that they should play along with the THUMPing ceiling, but fortunately the THUMP THUMP was less audible when the band played. Two Loons had a full sound with guitar, bass, drums, marimba (with violin bow in one song), and their dream pop sounded as good as on record. Some of the songs they played: Parachute, Looking for landmarks, Women THUMP THUMP whisper, Stones and bones, Sunset room, Monkey, Tragically hip, Toxic shellfish in the sun, Marietta. Two Loon's music works better when I listen to all the instruments rather than float on one melody line (eg vocals), which I think is why I don't get a giddy pop thrill from them, more appreciate lots of pleasant and interesting noises. They were personable people, engaging the room THUMP THUMP in a silly argument about the color of different numbers, and Jonathan Kochmer chatting to ectophiles about trepanning. Jaggery's music is darker, jagged, less ethereal than I expected from http://www.myspace.com/jaggery. Only sometimes sweet like the jaggery they had on their merchandise table. The energetic drummer reminded me of Brian Viglione minus the theater, and his ornate percussion sometimes worked against the keyboard, THUMP THUMP harp and voice, but if their bassist had been there the sound might have been more integrated. THUMP THUMP singer Mali was intense, eye rolling, hair tossing, and I liked that her lyrics weren't night-blossom-laden goth stuff, though sometimes they were *too* ordinary and mundane, so I'm a bit picky. The harpist Petaluma Vale (there's a name!) added a prettiness and delicacy to Mali and Daniel's (?) harder percussive keyboard and drum sounds. Some of their songs seemed pieces stuck together rather than a whole, and the spoken song that the rest of the audience really liked reminded me of Flight of the Conchords spoken word 'issues' parody song 'Think about it'. But for a first hearing, there was lots of beauty and intrigue, and fierce closer '7 stone' (with the drums propelling it forward rather than ornamenting) was amazing, and I could easily end up a fan. Hope to see them again. K. THUMP THUMP ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 2008 00:23:10 -0400 From: morayati@email.unc.edu Subject: Silje Nes Anyone heard of her? Everything I'm reading about her debut _Ames Room_ is sounding very promising. 2008's shaping up to be a GREAT year in music. I can't keep up with it! - -Sarah ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #500 ***************************
