Besides, it was a great year for music for me, and this year's shaping up really nicely, so I thought it would be good to clear the decks. So, belatedly and in no particular order and, yes, IMHO: 1. "Up in our Bedroom After the War" by Stars. 2. "King of Cards" by Tom McRae. 3. "Songs for the Road" by David Ford. 4. "American Doll Posse" by Tori Amos. 5. "Find Me" by Happy Rhodes. 6. "Autumn of the Seraphs" by Pinback. 7. "White Chalk" by PJ Harvey. (While I admire the album more than I actually like it, I acknowledge its genius). 8. "The Neon Bible" by Arcade Fire. 9. "Be Careful What You Wish For" by Jonatha Brooke. (A bit of an iffy one, here: a disappointment after "Back at the Circus", being a bit shiny and glossy, but this is still an album I keep coming back to). 10. "Summer Storm Chronicles" by Noe Venables. 11. "Spirit If..." by Kevin Drew. 12. "Challengers" by the New Pornographers. Bubbling under: "The Crane Wife" by the Decemberists. "Nuclear Daydream" by Joseph Arthur. Disappointments: Patty Griffin, Kate Walsh, Feist, Kristen Hersh and, um, Bjork. This last, I think has more to me just falling out of tune with her "elf caught in a steam press" style vocals. Thanks, but no thanks (artists I just couldn't get into): My Morning Jacket and Caribou Maybe next time: Terra Naomi. Definitely promise, but not quite there yet. Fave re-releases: "Boulders" by Roy Wood, "Sitting Targets" by Peter Hammill and "The Man in the Bowler Hat" by Stackridge. Least favourite CD: "Boys and Girls in America" by the Hold Steady. Older CDs I tried to rediscover, to no avail: "Tales of Topographic Oceans" "Up" by Peter Gabriel, as well as "Boys for Pele" "Either/Or" and "XO" Fave film: A tie between "Inland Empire" and "Atonement". Least fave film: Probably "Control", but that's mainly down to the narrow field. Fave book: David Mitchell's "Ghostwritten" Least fave: "This Book Will Save Your Life" by AM Homes. O..M....G. Mmm, well, you could get Kate Bush's first two albums (The Kick Inside and Lionheart), which were released in 1978 and 1979 respectively. Listen to Patti Smith, people like PJ Harvey were influenced by her greatly, Horses is her most acclaimed work (with good reason). Fleetwood Mac's self-titled album, along with Rumours and Tusk, are great to listen to. Glad that you have Laura Nyro in there... umm... Get some Nico solo, like Chelsea Girl. Richard and Linda Thompson are great, I know you want pre 1980 but one of their best, Shoot Out the Lights, came out in 1982. You can't go wrong with folksy stuff like Joan Baez, Judy Collins, you already like Joni Mitchell... all precursors of ecto. You can always listen to men who influenced Ecto... Genesis (i.e., Peter Gabriel), Bowie, Pink Floyd... I have plenty of non-ecto-related recs too. I have at least one suggestion that I know Neile will wholeheartedly endorse. That would be Sandy Denny. Since you like Nick Drake you will probably get into the late 60s early 70s English folk rock scene. Sandy was the singer for several bands (Fairport Convention and Fotheringay) and was a solo artist. To find out more detail about the amazing Sandy Denny please read the Ectophile's Guide entry on her. My favorite CDs are Fairport's "Liege & Lief" and her solo CDs "The North Star Grassman and the Ravens" and "Sandy". Another one to check out is Jacqui McShee of the band Pentangle. They were another leader in that movement. In the blues rock vein there is Julie Driscoll. In the pop vein there is Melanie. You might like her because you like Laura Nyro. Although in my opinion, Laura Nyro has a lot more substance as a songwriter. And another one of my favorites in the prog rock vein is Sonja Kristina of the English band Curved Air. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 60s and one of my favorite bands was It's a Beautiful Day. They had a wonderful lead singer Pattie Santos. Besides wonderful female singers both Curved Air and It's a Beautiful Day had amazing violin players. My recommendations here would be the eponymous debut by It's a Beautiful Day and "Phantasmagoria" by Curved Air. One more suggestion would be to check out Judy Dyble who was also for a time the singer with Fairport Convention. After that she was briefly with Giles, Giles and Fripp (the precursor to the mighty 1969 original King Crimson line-up). There is a beautiful early demo version of "I Talk to the Wind" with Judy singing on it with Ian McDonald that I love. Just drop me a line and I can send you a link to my top 100 CDs of all time which has many 60s and 70s CDs that you may want to check out. There are a number of modern Ecto artists on there as well. You can get a sense of my taste and how the 60s and 70s music might relate to the Ecto artists. I hope that this helps. I would second the recommendatoin of Sandy Denny and Patti Smith--my favorite early Patti Smith album is Wave, but all of them are quite good. I'd also recommend Annie Haslam/Renaissance -- sort of classically infused prog rock with stunning vocals. The Fleetwood Mac suggestion is a good one, also Buckingham/Nicks. More in the rock vein are early Heart (I have a fondness for Magazine and Dog and Butterfly), and some of Grace Slick's material (both solo and with Jefferson Airplane), even Pat Benatar's first album. For early jazzier influences, try Dinah Washington, Nina Simon, Lena Horne, Keely Smith, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday. For folkier/country influences consider Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Carole King, Joan Armatrading, Rickie Lee Jones, Janis Ian, Karla Bonoff, Linda Ronstadt, Wendy Waldman, Phoebe Snow, Buffy Sainte-Marie. Other late 70's that are really more 80's bands -- the first couple of Blondie releases, early Siouxsie and the Banshees, Hazel O'Connor (1980), The Pretenders first album (also borderline--came out in 1980). From the 1970s, "Soon," which Happy covers, is from *Relayer*, and another part of the Yes medley, "I Sleep Alone," is from Rabbitt's album *A Croak and Grunt in the Night.* > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of > gordodo@optonline.net > Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2008 6:47 AM > To: ecto@smoe.org > Subject: recos of 60s/70s ecto influencing albums? > > in looking at some stats about my cd collection, i am realizing i have a > huge > gaping hole of music before 1980 (hell, really 1990) - i've started to > rectify > it slowly, but i am need of some recommendations of 60's and 70's releases > to > check out - especially ecto related/influential bands - i have 28 releases > total from 1960-1979 and 3014 releases from 2000 onwards...the full list of > artists that i have releases by from the 60s/70s include: ella fitzgerald, > muddy waters, laura nyro, anita o'day, mississippi john hurt, aretha > franklin, > velvet underground/nico, nick drake, dusty springfield, vashti bunyan, linda > perhacs, victoria spivey, marvin gaye, neil young, janis joplin, patti > austin > and joni mitchellhelp please!!!jasonnp Amy Annelle - A School of Secret > Dangers ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 2008 16:29:11 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: recos of 60s/70s ecto influencing albums? Which Laura Nyro do you have? Because New York Tendaberry is the essential, followed by Christmas and then Eli. Ditto the Patti Smith. Love "Easter" as well as "Horses." Look for "Primordial Lovers" by Essra Mohawk. Lost contemporary of Joni and Laura... Circuitous, elliptical compositions with impressionistic lyrics. I'm told that "real" (as in snobby elitist) Nico fans go for Marble Index, Desert Shore and the like and that they're stronger representations of Nico's eccentricity and vision than Chelsea Girl. I keep meaning to pick them up. Probably no one else with be with me on this, but I think early Minnie Riperton is Ecto-friendly. Nina Simone, Nina Simone, Nina Simone. Make sure you get some albums and not just compilations... They tend to be better demonstrations of her range and experimentalism. Rickie Lee Jones is barely 70's, but "Pirates" belongs in every Ecto collection. I like Judee Sill. There's also some great stuff from the Numero Group, a reissue label. Look for their "Wayfaring Strangers: Ladies from the Canyon" disc, which is stuffed with forgotten and unknown Joni Mitchell influence-ees whose records were only heard by a handful of people. Their other great release is Catherine Howe's "What a Beautiful Place." I think the Patty Griffin is an incoherent mess of perfectly lovely songs that somehow have very little emotional impact compared to her earlier work. I think the Kristin Hersh starts strong and then fizzles. And... Totally not criticizing or making fun of you here, am just entertained -- I think Noe would giggle over having her Journals turned into Chronicles. tim On 5/13/08 7:05 AM, "Adam Kimmel" wrote: > Found this in my drafts folder and thought, "Hey, nobody's watching, might as > well slip it out now". Hey sorry to shout but I am very excited! My copy of "Glow in the Dark" just arrived in the mail this afternoon. I have been enjoying it ever since it arrived. This is a stunningly beautiful collection of music. Kevin's music is incredibly heartfelt and emotional. As with Near Life Experience, the compositions and arrangements are intricate and evolve in a flowing cinematic manner. I really feel many of you here are going to adore Kevin's latest masterpiece! What an absolute boon year for Ecto music releases! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 2008 00:59:15 +0000 (GMT) From: gordodo@optonline.net Subject: Re: recos of 60s/70s ecto influencing albums? i've got laura's live at the filmore, eli, and the album she did with labelle...NY Tendaberry is on the wish listi have really been liking minnie ripperton - her capitol years compilation has a lot of great stuff on it - and a lot more psychadellic than i would have imagined...nico's marble index and desert shore (along with chelsea girl) are already on my want list...along with the patti smithi've got both judee sill albums (just forgot to include them on the original list)nina simone is a favorite as well...although i got rid of her live in montreaux dvd where she was stoned off her ass the whole time - it was good to watch once but i had no need to see it again...i've already added a bunch of pentangle, fairport convention, (even more) sandy denny, lena horne, keely smith, hazel o'connor, julie driscoll, it's a beuatiful day and Judy Dyble to the wish list to check out further :)thanks and keep em coming!jason ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #486 ***************************
