After the fire, blood and sensuality of Carina Round this was quite a contrast, and I don't mean to do Vienna a disservice by saying that -- it was great to see her perform again, It was also great to see a decent crowd turn out to see her (where do they come from? How do they know? I should have run a poll) on a hot and sunny Sunday evening when the default mode would be to sit outside with a cool drink, rather than cram into an airless, sunless basement. But it was certainly worth it. First, the openers: The Bowmans, twin sisters of ethereal beauty with wondrous harmonies and infectious good humour, but without much in the way of attention-grabbing songs. Then AM, an affable male singer/songwriter with a guitar who had very nice...um...hair. And a beard. Truth be told, despite my determination to like him (I do try: I'm not a total snob, you know) my attention kept wandering. And then Vienna. Major problem, for me, was my seating: I'd made the mistake of grabbing my customary perch by the bar which, at the Borderline, usually combines the luxury of being able to sit through a gig with a great view. Not this time, however: Vienna was playing an upright piano, angled in such a way that she had her back to my portion of the audience for pretty much the entire gig. It was frustrating, to say the least. Her accompaniest, Alex Wong, was indeed a man of many parts, providing amazing multi-limbed percussion and backing vocals, as well as strumming the guitar for one of his own songs, which Vienna accompanied him on. Otherwise, it was a healthy dose of "Dreaming Through the Noise", which really suited the intimate atmosphere. "Gravity" from the first and "Homecoming" and "Harbour" from the second, if memory serves me correctly, as well as one new song, a startling and quite stunning blues number sung away from the piano. This was the only point in the evening where Vienna took centre stage and I got to see more than her back, so it made quite an impression on me, as well as the fact that the song was atypical and arresting. Good to meet at least one fellow ecto at the gig (Hi!), and I'd be surprised if others weren't out there, somewhere. The Borderline is getting quite a work-out from my new-found gigging energy, for however long this might last: in about a week and a half I'm seeing Okkervil River there, which should be quite an experience. And then, at the Bloomsbury, Thea Gilmore at the beginning of June. Thea's new album is out next week, and I await with bated breath.
