Goldfrapp certainly aren't interested in any pure English folk music, as the band's white druid/clown outfits further attested. Allison wore her salmon pierrot costume, looking like she was sewn into a circular tablecloth (http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/coachella/2008/day1/38.jpg), which though silly has the benefit of drama when the arms are artfully manipulated, and of highlighting her legs. They opened with 'Paper bag', 'A&E' and a gorgeous 'Utopia', with soaring vocals despite Allison's cold. She was pissy about her vocals and technical issues, and ended one song ('Cologne Cerrone Houdini'?) with a loud "Fuck," before stomping off to the sidelines. Her vocals were a bit low in the mix for me anyway - from the balcony, the loud rumbly bass disturbed my chest and with at least 6 different keyboards, guitar, bass, electric violin, and whatever Will was doing hidden on the sidelines, the sound was usually overfull and didn't distinguish much between songs. Still, was loving the first half of the concert, also with 'U never know' and 'Satin chic' with a cute little doll dance. 'Road to somewhere', 'Eat yourself', the first half of 'Little bird' and 'Monster love' slowed things down too much and chatter started up. The audience came alive to 'Number 1' and a wonderful 'Strict machine', which I 'knew' was 'Train' when it started (it shared the churning noise), and then 'knew' was 'Strict machine' when the beat kicked in, and then 'knew' was 'Ooh la la', and then it turned out to be 'Strict machine.' I have no problem with the similarities - I love all those songs; why not re-use, re-explore such fun territory. Off to encore, back with a "hillybilly" version of 'Ooh la la' which was a real let-down - they turned a great stomping T-Rex number into a light novelty song. The band didn't seem supportive of their interpretation either; Allison said "I don't even know what hillybilly means. I'm English." The show ended with 'Caravan girl' and 'Happiness', again a let-down - fun songs but people were much more responsive to songs from the past three albums. After 'Strict machine' Allison had said something like "Good to see you finally standing up" which was odd. Put 'Ride a white horse', 'Train', 'Yes sir', 'Pilots' in the setlist if you want that - audience response is within your control! Looking forward to Woj's recording :) K. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2008 23:20:05 -0400 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: Goldfrapp concert On Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:19 PM, Karen Hester wrote: Allison wore her salmon pierrot costume, looking like she was sewn into a > circular tablecloth > (http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/coachella/2008/day1/38.jpg), > which though silly has the benefit of drama when the arms are artfully > manipulated, and of highlighting her legs. ...and of separating those in the know from the rest of us who just thought she was wearing a nightie on stage.
