A .torrent file is not a music file; it's a tiny text file that is used by a BitTorrent client to connect you to a BitTorrent "tracker" from which the full-size file is actually downloaded. BitTorrent is a method of doing distributed downloads of data, in people download the file(s) in small chunks from several people at the same time...and as you receive those small chunks, your BitTorrent client can start uploading them to other people. Files distributed over BitTorrent can be moved faster and more cheaply than by other means. There are tons of BitTorrent clients out there. I personally like Bits on Wheels for the Mac (http://www.bitsonwheels.com). Another popular client is Azureus (http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/). Google will show you lots of other clients. Install a client, open the .torrent file, and the client will start downloading, as long as there are people out there "seeding" the data. It's considered good manners for BitTorrent users to leave the client running for a while after your data have finished downloading, as this will speed downloads for other users (since your machine is still pushing out the data). jeff n.p. _befriended_, Innocence Mission ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2008 09:30:46 -0400 From: "Jeffrey Burka" Subject: what Fisher is up to The other day I was wondering what Fisher was up to, as it's been a while since _The Lovely Years_ came out. It seems she's got two things going on. One is a disc of acoustic 70's covers due out next month. Samples at http://www.fishermusic.com/AC_Cafe_2.html The other is a collaboration with a string quartet doing versions of stuff ranging from Pink Floyd to Elvis Costello to Imogen Heap. http://www.citysoundmusic.com/projects/notes_from_the_edge.html While it's nice to hear Kathy's voice on the TV and radio, I hate that it's because she's singing a sappy commercial (CVS, anyone?). Please don't confuse that with accusations of selling out, though...if she can do jobs like that to put food on the table for her kid, I'm happy for her! Anyway, as a big Fisher fan, I must admit to being quite pleased to have a bunch of new music coming my way... jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2008 08:29:08 -0700 From: Michael Pearce Subject: Re: Mary Fahl's missing tribute to Pink Floyd Yngve Hauge wrote: >Now if people could seed the thing I would be very much happy .... If you succeed in getting the feed going, leave it up for a few days if you can. I think anyone can be a seed or it wouldn't be possible to download it at all. I need to learn more about how seeding works. My copy downloaded in something like 12 minutes off a large handful of seeders. After I pulled a few chunks, my client started seeding to a single leacher. I left the client running for about 6 hours. Perhaps I'll start it back up this evening... jeff n.p. _From the Dark Side of the Moon_, Mary Fahl ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2008 14:33:57 -0400 From: "Jeffrey Burka" Subject: A Broke Machine I'm on my first listen to Terami's new disc, and while I'm sure I'll have more to say about it later, I just need to say, good grief, what the heck happened to her voice? It's become utterly incredible, where before it was merely captivating! Her vocals on this album are richer, more assured, jazzier, more sultry, and, I dunno, maybe "grown up" is the right term. I'll be seeding it for the next day or so, on and off because my connection is a bit erratic at the moment. If anybody wants to download this don't delay, go for it now! ... I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2008 21:29:07 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: Mary Fahl's missing tribute to Pink Floyd > According to my Azureus there are 12 seeds at the moment, including > myself. Parts of it are very cool. On the other hand, Mary Fahl is no Clare Torry... Still, I'm glad to have it, and if it ever gets an official release, I'd definitely buy it. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2008 12:31:42 +1000 From: andrew fries Subject: Re: Mary Fahl's missing tribute to Pink Floyd Jeffrey Burka wrote: > It's...interesting.
