I just had time to catch it on a local college channel. It was indeed a great collection of performers. Atypical for the standard American St Patrick's Day fare. I particularly enjoyed Jo and her dancing (and sense of humor); nice to see the mix of older and contemporary performers. I thought that, on my broadcast, the video synch seemed a bit off on Susan's first song. But with so few vocals, it is possible that the synch was off on the entire broadcast but only showed up on the vocals. Maybe it was Comcast. Tell me this isn't interesting: From http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Music/03/17/people.crow.ap/index.html LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Sheryl Crow says she'll soon be singing with Fleetwood Mac, a move sure to give new life to the classic rock band, which hasn't toured in several years. "I don't want to make any official announcements, but I will say that we definitely have plans for collaborating in the future, and we'll see what happens," Crow told the AOL music Web site Spinner.com in a story posted Thursday. The 46-year-old singer didn't give a date, but said it could happen next year. She's already thinking about what she'd like to perform. "I'd love to do 'The Chain,' I'd love to do 'Second Hand News,' " Crow said. Crow said she looked forward to working with friend Stevie Nicks. "I think the person I learned the most hands-on from is Stevie Nicks because she allowed me not only to co-write with her but also to produce her, and she's a true artist," she said. Crow would give the band and Nicks a boost. According to Spinner.com, Nicks had said she wouldn't continue with Fleetwood Mac without keyboardist Christine McVie, who retired from touring in 1998. McVie joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 shortly after marrying the band's bass guitarist, John McVie. Fleetwood Mac last toured in 2004. Crow is currently touring after the release of her latest album, "Detours." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 15:17:43 -0400 From: meredith Subject: SXSW Hi, Well, I survived another SXSW. What an absolute madhouse. There were more attendees this year, yet notably much less of interest actually happening (most of the people I talked to had the same reaction, so I know it wasn't just me). Looking through the program book, it was hard to find a whole lot I wanted to see ... and of course what I did want to see conflicted with itself more often than not, so I still managed to miss more than I saw. The most notable "miss" was Two Loons For Tea. :( I am now convinced that I will never, ever see them play live. I walked into the Sarathan Records party at 3pm on the dot, which was when I was convinced Two Loons were playing ... but no, they had played at 2, and The Ettes were setting up on stage. :P Jonathan did come up to *me* to say hello, though, which was unexpected. Both he and Sarah are lovely people, and I would really like to see them perform some day, dammit!! (I did stick around to see The Ettes, your basic grrl-post-punk outfit that I'm sure my Wild Woman Radio partner in crime will be all over. Not exactly my thing, but they were fun to watch.) I also missed Syd Straw, because I'm an idiot and thought she was playing on Friday but no, she played on Thursday. Argh. Abra Moore played three times, and all three times I had to be somewhere else. This was also disappointing. And Dolly Parton cancelled her big show at the Austin Music Hall, which was a supreme bummer, though realistically I know I probably wouldn't have been able to get in anyway since people were planning on camping out in line and I just couldn't do that. I did, however, get to a few things: * My Brightest Diamond (Central Presbyterian Church, Friday at midnight): Shara Worden accompanied by a string quartet, all clad in bizarre Lewis-Carroll-meets-the-Hofbrauhaus costumes. Absolutely, stunningly brilliant. I heard that MBD will be touring later this year with that exact configuration, and I don't care what work I have to blow off to get there, I *will* go. * Christine Fellows (The Velveeta Room, Saturday at 10pm): I've been a fan (and friend) of Christine's for many years, yet this was the first time I'd ever seen her do a headlining set. She opened for The Mountain Goats in NYC a couple years ago and I got to both of those shows, but that was it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that she kicked off the Six Shooter Records showcase with a reprise of the show she did up in the Yukon wherein she performed a mix of songs from _Nevertheless_ and _Paper Anniversary_, accompanied by strings (The Zacharias Sisters), while artist Shari Boyle did amazing accompanying live animations using an overhead projector. Because of the limitations of the venue there were no lights at all on stage except for the overhead, but that ended up being very cool. Christine played a Nord Electro keyboard and ukelele, and it was all very weird and wonderful. Alas there was a *very* loud band playing on the other side of the wall so the quietest bits got drowned out, but she soldiered through and the crowd (mostly Canadian) loved it. In a SXSW overly infested with loud rock bands, she provided a welcome oasis of civility and artfulness. I hope someone influential was there to write about it. (Christine is going on tour with The Weakerthans as opening act next month, including NYC on April 11 and Northampton, MA on April 12. I will definitely be at the one on the 12th, and hopefully the 11th as well if I can get my travel schedule worked out.) * X (Emo's, Saturday at midnight): It was a crazed mass of 40-something drunken humanity, but I had to be there. It was the full original lineup of X, a band I've admired since I first saw the video for "Hungry Wolf" on 120 Minutes back in high school. And sure enough, they opened their set with a grinding version of that song and didn't look back. John Doe was pogoing around the stage like a man half his age, Exene Cervenka was utterly out of her mind, Billy Zoom grinned maniacally as he shredded his guitar, and DJ Bonebrake provided their signature driving beat. They all sounded amazing. Alas I only made it through half their set, as I had to be up a 4 to make an airport run, plus I got beer sprayed on me and I could see the beginnings of a mosh pit forming not too far from where I was. I'm too old for all of that crap (and really, have been since I was 20), so I got out while I could. So yeah, I didn't really see all that much, but I greatly enjoyed those three things. Our MPressFest on Saturday afternoon was a success too, so yay. I greatly enjoyed all of the musical performances, in particular Amy Speace and The Tearjerks (and not just because I know her and her band... they were by far the musical and performance highlight of the day, and if Amy doesn't become a Nashville star with her new record there really is something wrong with the world). Mieka Pauley was a powerhouse, as always. And that Rachael Sage person didn't do too badly, herself. *g* That's it for industry festival madness until CMJ. Good thing too, as it'll take me until October to recover. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 19:44:46 -0400 From: morayati@email.unc.edu Subject: Re: SXSW I'm seeing Christine Fellows (and the Weakerthans, and whomever else is playing; the publicity around the thing has been remarkably unclear) in Chapel Hill next month. After declaring _Nevertheless_ the best album of 2007, it's only right that I do so. (Plus, it's always astonishing when my taste coincides with that of Chapel Hill's music venues. OK, maybe not all that astonishing, but I'm accustomed to looking at lists of upcoming shows and seeing only one or two I actually want to attend.) Glad to hear it was good.
