I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of LIZ PHAIR (specifically her early early stuff) but even I am baffled by her inclusion on the list. Her guitar work is weak and derivative - most of it from fellow Matador artist Barbara Manning who should have been on the list. I actually would have put JULIANA HATFIELD or AIMEE MANN on the list before LIZ PHAIR, I don't think either of their guitar work is all that great. Though better than LIZ's I think LIZ just got listed because her first album Exile in Guyville was such a great album - and it was guitar-based. Not because she's a fantastic guitarist. Snaps for them including KRISTIN HERSH on there though. CHARO definitely should have been included. I'm also surprised that they didn't include anyone from pop friendly bands like The Go-Go's or The Bangles. Oh well. And I second the whole GOLDFRAPP album is amazing thread. Never been a big GOLDFRAPP fan, but I really love the new album. Also I have lately been obsessed with Scandinavian artists. Bertine Zetlitz, Robyn (whose finally getting a US domestic release), Jens Lekman, Jose Gonzales, Loney Dear, Maia Hirawasa, I'm from Barcelona, . Anyone have any other suggestions for me? I am not even in Scandinavia right now as I am completing a childrens book in Damascus, but I am still listening to Scandinavian artists all the time. Though not at this very moment. It is time for the long Friday prayer here and I am situated right next to the huge Umayyad mosque so I can't focus on any more singing than the constant Allah Akhbar. Im pretty sure youll enjoy Swedish LYKKE LI (Lykkelig means happy in Danish/Swedish). She is similar to Feist it seems and Danes are raving about her right now. Since I have been in Syria the last month I havent been able to buy her debut, but her myspace-page sounds hugely promising: http://www.myspace.com/lykkeli HAFDIS HULD: Acoustic-electro-folk singer/songwriter (and ex-GusGus-singer) from Iceland with the best humour. Slightly similar to Gudrid Hansdottir and Ingrid Michaelson. I really love her lyrics. Try Plastic Halo and Ski Jumper. http://www.myspace.com/hafdishuld AURA: Feisty and Stylish Danish singer/songwriter similar to Kate Nash, Suzanne Vega, Regina Spektor and surprisingly Tracey Chapman (the voice) She has got all 5 and 6 star-reviews in Denmark including from me. I gave her 6 stars in Gaffa the other day (www.gaffa.dk) Try Something from Nothing, Glass Bone Crash ... in fact all of them. http://www.myspace.com/auradione GUDRID HANSDOTTIR: Faroese singer/songwriter with a yearning edge and sad lyrics similar to The Cardigans, Swan Lee and occasionally PJ Harvey. My American neighbour at the Danish Institute here in Damascus had never heard of the Faroe Islands so for those of you who havent: They are situated in the North Sea close to Iceland and the Shetland Islands. Very cold place. I have just been lecturing up there and experienced the worst snowstorm ever. Try Love is Dead and Sleeping with Ghosts http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=143 569186 ELIN RUTH SIGVARDSSON: Edgy Swedish singer/songwriter reminiscent of Carina Round and Rilo Kiley. Try How You Dug Your Own Grave for the most mesmerizing guitarloop. http://www.myspace.com/elinruth HELLSONGS: Sounds like a death metal band, but in fact Swedish Hellsongs is more like Regina Spektor/Feist etc. without ever sounding like an imitation. The quality of the material is remarkably high and the songs a varied and beautiful. I dont know why they have chosen such a terrible name. And terrible, terrible album cover. You cant listen to my favourite tune Rock the Night from their myspace-page it seems. But you can listen to Symphony of Detruction which is almost as good. http://www.myspace.com/hellsongs And for those of you who enjoy Amy Winehouse theres British shooting star ADELE. Her arrangements recall Motown, Madeleine Peyroux and Lauryn Hill and her voice is pure Amy. Im personally quite smitten by her. Avoid first single Chasing Pavements which is much too bombastic. I much prefer Hometown Glory and Melt My Heart to Stone. http://www.myspace.com/adelelondon I second Maia Hirasawa and An Pierli. The latter is a Dutch version of Tori Amos especially on her stunning third release Helium Sunset. That remains my favourite album of hers. And to those of you who havent discovered it already: Noe Venable is finally available from emusic which means I have been listening to Boots, The World is Bound.. and The Summer Storm Journals everyday for a month. Ill probably think of Syria whenever I listen to Noes voice from now on and believe me I will. Thanks a lot for raving about this artist for so long. Among people I forgot...Pat Place, who started with James Chance and the Contortions and later led the Bush Tetras, is an all-time favorite. Rhythmically intricate and heavily dissonant, just the way I like it. To clarify: Corin Tucker is a very good =rhythm= guitarist, but her parts are simpler and more carefully-played than Carrie Brownstein's. Their interplay is one of the best things about Sleater-Kinney, to be sure. If we're going to mention people few have heard of, I'll bring up Heather Mount of the New York band Skulpey a decade or so ago. Very complicated parts. And one amazing song she played her guitar with a wire whisk. Currently, there's Indigo Street, who has her own band Partyface, but whom I've mostly seen playing with Ed Pastorini's 101 Crustaceans. (Ed is, among other things, the former keyboardist/guitarist of Elysian Fields.) Ed and Indigo make up the most dissonant guitar duo short of Frith and Kaiser I can think of. Indigo also plays on the new 2 Foot Yard album. Bass players are a whole different question. Aww, come on, Joan's fun. :) One of the more entertaining concerts I've been to in the past few years was seeing Joan Jett & The Blackhearts at the Music Box Theater in Hollywood a year and a half ago or so. The highlight was when another of The Runaways (whose name I'm blanking on b/c I'm old) joined her on stage to do an old Runaways tune. Wasn't expecting that. Joan's not the best singer or musician or writer on the planet by a long stretch, but she knows how to put on a good show, and I admire her for surviving in the business as long as she has with (most of) her sanity and principles intact.
