Unfortunately, none of her CDs is available here (in Canada) but i ordered "Find Me" through Vicki, and it was one of my personal Top Ten of 2007. But, as i don't use credit cards and the service charge on a postal money order is exorbitant, i haven't yet ordered any of her other CDs from her website. Anyway, I played "Find Me" for some friends who live in Toronto and they loved it, too. They're here this weekend for a visit and they brought with them an early birthday present (or late Christmas present, they couldn't decide) for me: seven (7!) Happy Rhodes CDs! I am now the delighted owner of "Warpaint," "Rearmament," "Ecto," "Equipoise," "Building The Colossus," "The Keep," and "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight." Actually, so far the only one i've listened to (three times) has been "Warpaint." (I don't want to listen to them all in a row, lest they blur together.) Why is this woman virtually unknown? It's brilliant. My friends have promised to start spreading the word about Happy when they get back home -- Torontonians would lap this stuff up. It's 27 below zero Celsius outside, but i don't care, Happy Rhodes is keeping me warm. OK, off to listen to "Rearmament" now. Magic. Late last month, there was a NYTimes piece on Joanna Newsom; http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/29/arts/music/29newsome.html it was in advance of her performances with the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Interestingly, the process of preparing the music for the performance took nearly a year. And the follow-up review on the performance: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/02/arts/music/02joan.html Don't know whether guesting on Martha Stewart's show to publicize your album is a sign of going too mainstream or what, but Sarah Brightman was on the show a couple of weeks ago. Before having the requisite craft/cooking segment inflicted on her, she spoke a bit about the new album, the gothic elements, and the cathedral where she recorded it. If I recall, she also spoke about the play/theatrical thing she has recently been involved in. For the daring, who have a fast connection and can handle all those glitzy bells and whistles - as well s the commercial before each segment - there are videos of her initial talking/cooking segments and also her performance: You want "Cooking with Sarah 1" and "Cooking with Sara 2" and then scroll ahead to the performance in the selections to the right. http://tinyurl.com/ynmalu Regards, Carolyn Andre - --- candre@house-of-music.com Chicago, IL / USA Support Independent Music! I was surprised too at the lack of discussion, but then I'm pretty sure I mentioned it over the holidays. But it's an amazing concept and I'm glad a few more artists are catching on. (I really like Donita Sparks's song on there.) Plus, the read/write section is about the coolest thing ever. I'm not just saying this because they posted my remix. Well, OK, part of it has to do with the fact that they posted my remix, but it's a great idea. - -Sarah Quoting gaseous clay : > one time at band camp, morayati@email.unc.edu said: > > http://kristinhersh.cashmusic.org/downloads.php > > glad to see that this was mentioned on ecto, though there doesn't > seem to have been much reaction to it. > > i caught the initial announcement about kristin and cash back when it > started but have been out of the loop and didn't get a chance to > check it out until now. while she's been a pioneer in exploring new > ways to make a living as an independant artist deemed commercially > unviable by the industry, it's excellent to see that a lot of those > things are coming to fruition in cash music. > > incidentally, her blog is highly recommended! kristin's a great > writer and her involvement in the music industry on all sides gives > her perspective on its evolution extra weight -- and it's interesting > to contrast kristin's thoughts on this matter with, say, jenny > toomey's. > > anyway, the point is, kristin's reaction to the upheaval in the world > of music is principled and, imho, worth supporting, so it's wonderful > to see that there are ample ways to do that. > > the third song was just posted. they're all quite good and bode well > for the new record! > > woj ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2008 20:37:12 -0800 From: Gregory Bossert Subject: Re: Kristin Hersh and CASH Music On Feb 10, 2008, at 7:59 PM, morayati@email.unc.edu wrote: > Plus, the read/write section is about the coolest thing ever. Kristen really nailed it: "cover" art, beautifully presented lyrics, and woo! the mix "stems", to which i am already doing awfully naughty things. i gave her what i gave radiohead, just to make a point (the point being: more please!) also, you know, the music is good. really good. goosebumps good. damn, 4AD muses good. great lyric from "slippershock": "hard to say it's hard luck when we had it coming" the recent Tribe talk (i am SO delighted to find out that Greg, Eric, and sometimes Terri worked out the video game thing. like, say, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, being as they are the wackiness-inducing successes they are, and Thief and Bioshock and cetera) brought up the discussion of groups reforming (with Tribe, clearly post-hell-over- freezing (which happens, mind you, in the rock star reunion world every year or so)). anyway, t. muses oughta kiss up and sell out, gosh darn it, 'cuz they were a giant fire breathing monster and there are cities still need crushing...
