It's finally ready for unveiling. The Heady Heart Project is an initiative geared toward harnessing the collective energy of fans to create alternative support structures for complex and multi-dimensional women singer-songwriters (composer-vocalists) whose art threatens dominant culture. The project applies a gender, race and class-based analysis to the rejection of women who defy "genre" and categorization. ...It's also about making fans of unusual and eccentric music by women less complacent, more active & engaged with making womens' music and careers sustainable. You can read more about the project, its genesis, goals and recommended artists on the website I've created at www.headyheart.org. My first step is a series of artist profiles (accompanied by suggested action steps) in Fluxcore, the online magazine where I'm a regular contributor. The first article, about Emily Bezar, recently posted. You can read it here: http://www.fluxcore.org/article.php?id=70 This idea never would have emerged without my experiences here. As a member of Ecto, I've learned a lot about what fans with chutzpah can accomplish. Whether it's Vickie's loyal promotion of Happy, Jessica's birth of the listserv, Neile & co's vigilant maintenance of the Guide to Good Music (this really is one of the richest resources on the web), Meredith's execution of the first few Ectofests (and her eventual transition into a music-oriented career), or Robert's hard work planning Ectofest 2007, just to name a couple of examples, I've been immensely inspired by all of you. A dynamic community, a critical mass, is absolutely essential for this project to become what I want it to be. So I need your help. Here's a few things that, if willing, you can do right away that would be immensely appreciated: ~I'd love it if those of you with websites or blogs would post links to the Heady Heart website in order to help me google better. ~Send me any stories you have as fans about promoting Heady-Hearted artists in creative ways, sharing the music with new listeners, or supporting artists' careers in other ways (ie the donation of time and services, the planning of festivals, etc). The sky's the limit here. I'd love to be surprised by something really awesome that never occurred to me. Stories like these will be shared and exchanged on the website to help galvanize new actions and ignite fans' creativity. ~Join the email list --> I'm eventually going to start a one-way email list where I'll consolidate news and updates about Heady Heart artists. This list will also include updates on the project and action suggestions. ~Send me any other feedback, suggestions or ideas. Thank you again for your words and inspiration, TIM J-Y ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #389 ***************************
