She's been around for quite a while, she first came to our attention as a singer for a Brisbane band 'George'. To be more precise, as one of two singers - the other one was her brother, and they split the lead vocal duties. I always thought George would be so much better if only Tyrone (her brother) would shut up, because as far as I was concerned, it was her voice that made them interesting. In any case, George went on to achieve reasonable degree of commercial success. Their best known (and quite possibly their best) song was 'Special ones' - and you can hear it on youtube, for example here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etskQri52_k It's not the official clip and it is quite boring as far as videos go, but the soundtrack is pretty good and clear so you can hear the song. It will give you a pretty good idea what to expect from Katie... so check it out and if you find it appeals, keep reading :) Katie has one of those 'jazzy' voices. I guess her voice and style could be compared with the likes of Norah Jones or Katie Melua, though I think she's a bit more interesting and not quite as commercial as they are but we're talking about similar style - basically, easy listening. Smooth as a well-worn pebble and not a bit of angst to be found anywhere. On 'Special ones' she sung 'I don't want to be angry...' and I guess she meant it :) She got married, had a child and now she's back with a solo album that seems to be mainly about love, happiness and domestic bliss. Musically she seems most interested in exploring the roots of pop music - - jazz, swing, bit of blues is probably there as well. It is not my usual fare but I guess I'm getting older and perhaps more mellow myself, because I find I now have a bit of room even for this kind of stuff. :) Here's another old George track with Katie doing vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OeLejP5Xk0 and one of her solo performance - this one is raw, made with from some lo-fi recording device but as usual in such cases, more interesting for that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHeOLcv3Pxw She does have a wonderful voice... Around last August she released her solo record, "Skin". Because I know Ectophiles will not abuse the privilege, I'll mention that there is a torrent out there at the moment that is still seeded, if you'd like to grab a sample. But be quick - it is still seeded at the moment, but it is low traffic so it can die any time. http://www.mininova.org/tor/1011146 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2008 14:41:11 -0800 From: Michael Pearce Subject: Re: For Fellow Tribe Fans At 1:55 AM -0500 1/26/08,meredith wrote: >http://ectoguide.org/alpha/t/tribe > >Further down the thread are links to MP3s, I highly recommend >checking them out. Not on the ectoguide page. I have been terribly behind on my ecto. As in, by months. I think Woj said it well (see the Ectophile's Guide): "the first five songs off /abort/ are probably one of the greatest first five songs off any albumthe most numbingly stunning sequence of five songs known to humanity." (The last three are also dangerously good.) There have been a few releases of "Abort." It keeps going out of print, but it keeps coming back. While my own Amazon review appears elsewhere, this seems to be where the action is going on at the moment: http://www.amazon.com/Abort-Tribe/dp/B0000057BI I've posted one of their finest moments here: http://highwire.stanford.edu/~straffin/Joyride.mp3 I will never grow tired of what Tribe did in their short but brilliant career. So, yeah, recommended and all.
