A few Digests back there was some discussion of the RIAA and independent artists. Couple of points - should these not have been posted previously - RIAA Radar can help identify artists that are RIAA-affiliated and not: http://www.riaaradar.com/search.asp And, indeed, the tools are now available to any artist to make a living from their music bypassing the mainstream industry structure - and with much greater ease than it was for a pioneer such as Ani DiFranco. He gives it over to a different "curator" each month, and this month is a hum-dinger. http://www.thestonenyc.com/calendar.php Note that *Mary Margaret O'Hara* is doing two performances there this weekend: an improv thing tonight (Friday) at 10pm, and a show tomorrow (Saturday) at 8pm. Naturally, tomorrow night is the *only* night I have to work this entire month. And I don't think there's a realistic chance I can get down there tonight, either. The Universe clearly hates me. :P (Further down, I see that next Saturday, the 12th is "Petra Haden with Laurie Anderson". Dammit this having to pack-and-move thing ... but who knows, if it's not too cold and I can get there early enough to ensure being able to get in, I might try it.) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2008 11:44:29 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: m2oh in nyc! "The bottle" means 'vexation', 'intrigue', 'irregularity' - yes, that describes the music. Also, 'an accident on a bicycle' and 'itching'; blessedly absent. The Stone (venue) hides behind a black door on the corner of Avenue C & 2nd St. It's a white room without a stage, with pictures of avant-garde musos on the wall. I have a fever so I snuggled into a corner, behind two black clad men drinking organic fruit juice and using charming phrases like "banging chicks" and "golden pussy" despite being in their 50s. So that is what experimental music fans talk about. I must hang out in such company more often. Mary Margaret O'Hara and band hadn't practiced as tomorrow's concert is the proper one they will prepare for. So tonight a drummer drummed, another drummer smashed, a guitarist strummed and noodled, a pianist tinkled and banged and plucked (the piano's intestines), and a woodwind/brass player blew. MMoH gargled and whistled and growled and warbled and whispered. She didn't sing much, which is a pity since many of those other noises can be made with lesser voices, but only she can sing with *that* voice. They were all good musicians, but lack of rehearsal meant those special improvisational moments where it "all comes together" were limited in frequency and length. I found the second drummer redundant, and the woodwind/brass often took the same role in the music that MMoH did - they both made didgeridoo noises and shrieks similar enough to be indistinguishable. Often her voice didn't add much, but watching MMoH try to find a song in the noise by moving her body and conducting with her eyes was interesting. She was mainly wordless, other than repeating "a nose, eyes, a mouth" when she saw those shapes in a plastic chair, and "he's in the dark" when she noticed the smashing drummer (not the drumming drummer) was out of reach of the lights. There were a few pauses in the music when they came down from a crescendo or fell out of a shared song. During one of these, 40 minutes in, a chick banger decided it was home time so he clapped. Others joined in, and MMoH happily went "oh, alright" and she walked off, and that was the end. Most of us sat there in the dark going "?", and looking at the lights, the organizer, the audience, the band, all in half-lit half-muted limbo. After a few minutes of that, we put on our coats and left. I must have enjoyed the concert since I was disappointed when it ended. A fine enough evening for $10, but not recommended when feverish unless your medicine makes you hallucinatory. Saturday's rehearsed concert should be better. K. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Jan 2008 00:32:56 -0500 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: Dresden Dolls on New Year's Eve "Do you mind pretending that midnight starts three minutes later? We fucked up organizing our setlist tonight" says Amanda. Sure, we say. "We're heading into midnight with an old Jewish protest song." Brian plays loud chords, Amanda bangs on drums - "You wake up late for school man you don't wanna go You ask you mom, "Please?" but she still says, "No!"... You gotta Fight for your Right TO PAAAAARRRTY" And we all cheer wildly. Fool that I am, I thought this was special to our New Year's show, but it turns out it's part of their general set at the moment. As are oldies 'Ultima esperanza' and 'The gardener' ("this is as good as it will get"). As is opening dressed as the Gestapo singing 'In the flesh'. As is the closing cover of the Eurythmics' 'Sweet dreams', with their support band Luminescent Orchestrii (kinda Eastern European music), with Amanda in a hideous blue prom dress. Perhaps the acrobats were extra - sparkly hoola hoops and a circus guy. Many people in the audience were dressed in masquerade-wear, so much to look at. Loved many things, including Amanda's song 'Astronaut' with Brian drumming. 'Glass slipper' was a bit quiet for the crowd so Brian asked to play 'Sex changes', which Amanda hadn't practiced ("if we mess up, it's his fault"). 'Half Jack' was its wild, dark self. No cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's 'Two-headed boy', which I guess was just as well as I would have died, man, and that would have been a pity (dying, I mean). Amanda has been losing her voice again, as detailed in her blog. Not sure if I've ever heard her without a raw croak. Brian is such a star. Across the ballroom it's his large theatrical movements that draw the eye. In a smaller venue (eg the two times I saw them in NZ), Amanda is just as compelling, but when they're dots across the room, Brian's leaping and hair tossing and leaning back to the horizontal and throwing his arms about is great fun. His speakers had to be duct-taped as they were threatening to jump onto him. He played guitar on several songs too. After the show, some people around me were arguing that he was the most important of the pair. I disagree - Dresden Dolls would still be a great recording act and good enough live act with a lesser drummer, but Amanda writes the songs for gawdsake :) Still, great that he's grown into his role, and the work with the jazz (?) band has strengthened his playing even further. Downstairs in Hammerstein Ballroom, Velvet Revolver played in the New Year's. For an extra $70 per ticket and the pleasure of being patted down by security (men in this line, ladies in that line), I could have stood in that queue. Instead, up 7 flights of steps to the 'Grand' Ballroom and a thoroughly enjoyable Dresden Dolls concert. K. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #360 ***************************
