Thanks for pointing to the page > Mash-ups are not terribly ecto, I guess Oh, I dunno. Happy's a huge Queen fan, and I can totally imagine her digging _A Night at the Hip Hopera_ by the Kleptones. I don't tend to listen to a lot of individual mashups, but I love mashup albums -- _American Edit_ by Dean Grey, _24 Hours_ and _A Night at the Hip Hopera_ by the Kleptones (and for that matter their new _Liver Than You'll Ever Be_). Though I'll admit I hated _The Gray Album_. jeff n.p. _Hydroplane_, Kristen Mooney (has anyone mentioned this here yet? I like Happy. I used to listen to her all the time 15 years ago and I loved her first 4, Warpaint, Equipoise, and BTC. But guess what? I have not enjoyed or played a Happy album to death since then. Does that remove my ecto privileges? I sure hope not. I enjoyed Ectofest, but honestly the best part was catching up with the ectophiles I knew from the early days, hearing Noe Venable perform and discovering her music. I have listened to 'The Summer storm journals' dozens of times and even ordered her older CDs on the strength of what I heard on her website. I never do this anymore. I was that moved. 'Find Me' sounds stale, in my opinion. Sorry if this offends the hard core ectophiles, but there is no single song that grabs me. Some are OK, but there is nothing that clicks with me the way 'Poetic Justice', 'Words weren't made for cowards', 'Possessed', or even 'Proof' did. I am not surprised. People change. Artists change. Why should we expect to always be in sync? So here's the music that really grabbed me this year: 1) The National - Boxer : By far the album of 2007 for me. I discovered this band in May, and have been listening to them non stop since. Saw them live twice and enjoyed every minute of their performance. 2) Travis - The boy with no name : Had I not discovered the National, this would have been my album of the year. This band's joy of performing is contagious. Their show at the Pavillion this summer was the most memorable and fun concert I have ever attended. 3) Noe Venable - The Summer Storm Journals : Masterful intricate art. There are moments that don't work for me, but for the biggest part, I am grateful for the chance to finally listen to Noe during ectofest. Can't wait to see more performances. 4) Manu Chao - La Radiolina : Another fun album. Political, multicultural, dynamic, and catchy. Why the line 'Ecuador, lluvias mil' works is a mystery, but whenever a song from this album comes up while I jog, I kick up the pace. 5) Arcade Fire - Neon Bible : A band at its creative peak. 'Intervention' and 'Keep the car running' are anthems. 'Ocean of noise' is an instant classic. My favorite band that I haven't seen perform live because they are too popular. 6) Jose Gonzalez - In our nature : Quiet, yet passionate. 7) Against Me! - New Wave : Loud and political. 8) Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55 : Romantic. 9) Radiohead - In Rainbows : Unexpected. 10) Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha : Clever. Hope nobody is upset, by my 'Find me' comments. Maybe I will like her next one. That's it for now. Happy new year to all! Hi there, Im one of the ecto members who did not mention Happy Rhodes latest outing on my best of-list and the reason is certainly not that its occupying my default #1 position. The truth is I havent heard Find Me and I honestly doubt I will anytime soon. When I joined this forum a couple of years back I got myself a copy of Many Worlds.., Warpaint, The Keep and Rhodesongs as I figured they would be up my street. Kate, Noe, Sarah, Suzanne, Jane, Cat, Ani, PJ etc. etc. are among my all time favourite artists, but although I find Happys voice amazing her music just doesnt do it for me. I am sorry. I respect that you ecto-people feel differently and I figured it would be okay for me to be on your list although Im not into Happy the way you are. After all we have hundreds of other artists in common, I find your guidelines and best of-lists truly valuable, and I hope to have inspired you with mine. However, Vickies and Michaels posts make it pretty clear to me that being on this list means supporting Happy in everything she does - and being policed if you don't. Please don't anybody think that. While this list was originally founded by fans of Happy Rhodes and contains some of her most dedicated fans in the world, it grew beyond being just for fans of Happy Rhodes very quickly, and our definition of "ecto music" encompasses many, many artists, genres, and tastes. I personally think Happy is wonderful and _Find Me_ is fantastic but let's not criticize anyone who doesn't find Happy or _Find Me_ to their taste. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2007 13:45:38 -0500 From: morayati@email.unc.edu Subject: Kansas City Star highlights 2007 female artists No, it doesn't mention Happy. I am sorry. i'm a big Happy fan (and i think i can count myself as her friend, also) although i wasn't aware of Happy at all until i heard Save Our Souls (The Keep version) on Echoes as a result of her Echoes Living Room Concert in 1995 or myabe it was '96. i also recognize that, even though there are other artists we talk about, the genesis of the list was with regard to Happy's music (the list is named after one of her albums) and, indeed, i think that our measure of how "ecto" someone's music is has something to do with some kinda objective or subjective similarities it may have with Happy's, whether it precedes Happy (like KaTe) or comes later. anyway, even though there's easily the possibility that Happy herself may peek at this mailing list (she wouldn't have to be subscribed since it is mirrored to fa.music.ecto), i have never felt obligated to just mindlessly go ga-ga about everything that Happy does. indeed, i do not like every Happy song, but i will not say which ones i don't. i don't think that she is so full of herself that she would expect or even *re*spect the sorta unflinching loyalty that, say Barbara Streisand fans are reputed to have (and that she eats up). South Park, Saturday Night Live, and other comics make good hay outa that. as gifted and as accomplished as Happy is (and i believe her to be a world-class talent, despite her obscurity as far as the wide pop culture is concerned), Happy is remarkably approachable and has a true measure of humility that both endears and draws deep respect from me about her as a person. this isn't the "Church of Happy Rhodes". we're fans. in a sorta jockular way, we rate her (and others, like Kate) as "goddess". i might do the same for Lisa Gerrard or Sade. but none of these ladies are impecable, indeed, as none of the rest of us are. i could see a problem with these "Best of" lists *here* on a fan site for Happy, in that not including her might be seen as "politically incorrect". that's why i just kept my own counsel regarding it. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2007 13:53:38 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Why Happy didn't make my best of-list (and why I'm out of here..) If ecto were a mailing list exclusively for discussion of the music of Happy Rhodes, it would've died the same slow death as many of the other artist-specific mailing lists hosted at smoe.org years ago. The charm and brilliance of ecto is precisely because it's not limited to a teeny box; the ecto "genre" is pretty broad, and the truth is that people can like and dislike whatever they want. The only "rule" this list has ever officially had is to keep it a flame-free zone. That's it. If you've never heard a note of Happy's music ... fine. If you have, but it wasn't your cup o' tea even though you like many of the other artists appreciated here ... fine. Just be nice, allow others the luxury of their opinions, and play well with others. Being a fan doesn't require that you love every note a musician puts out into the world. Witness what happened when KaTe released _The Red Shoes_, when Sarah McLachlan released _Surfacing_, or just look at the Tori-related discussion that happened in these pages just a few short weeks ago. (Hell, on a personal level I can say that I don't love every single song Rachael Sage has ever written ... but you know what, I also know I won't get fired for admitting that, so it's all good.) I didn't make an offical "best of 2007" list because, as I said, I am really behind on my new releases ... but _Find Me_ wasn't on my notables listing because truth be told, I think that production-wise it's kind of a step backward for her. It sounds like it was recorded between BtC and Equipoise, not as a follow-up to MWABT. Does that mean I'm taking "Words Weren't Made For Cowards" off my MySpace profile? No. Does that mean I'm going to stop playing Happy's stuff (even tracks from _Find Me_) whenever I sit in on Wild Woman Radio? Hell, no. Does that mean I have to leave ecto? Absolutely not. I am still a Happy Rhodes fan, and will still talk her up to anybody who will listen. I might just recommend something besides _Find Me_ as a first release for a newcomer to try. (And for the record, if Happy were standing right in front of me this very minute, I would tell her this to her face ... if an artist can't handle constructive criticism, they shouldn't be putting their stuff out there. I would hope that since I work in the music industry, she might even pay attention to what I had to say.) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2007 15:22:42 -0500 From: DanS <2005.carnivore99@verizon.net> Subject: The end of Sirens I got the official word today that my Sirens radio channel will be finished as of the end of 2007. I'm so sorry to hear that, Dan. :( I listened to the Sirens stream plenty on the days when I was at home working ...I enjoyed pretty much everything I heard on it (though that latest Melissa Etheridge single was pretty horrific, I must say ;). It was always cool to hear Happy or KaTe or Rachael pop up on there, sometimes more than occasionally. I have to admit I'm not sure the HD thing has much potential, given that Satellite is out there and growing ... I actively tried to find an HD radio to buy, but had zero luck even tracking such an animal down (the only "HD receivers" I came across were parts of elaborate home theater systems). If the average consumer can't even find a device with which to listen to the offering, I'm afraid the offering isn't going to last very long. As for what to do with your newfound free time, how about starting up an Internet radio station (hosted on a foreign server, of course, so it has a future)?
