All of the ones I know of or am already a fan of are too well-known (Meshell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu, Abbey Lincoln) or too not alive (Nina Simone) for my project. Anyway, I just discovered the jazz composer-vocalist Lenora Zenzalai Helm, and her album "Voice Paintings," which has a track called -- get this -- Equipoise! That's how I knew it was true love. Still haven't listened to her full album -- but on one of the samples I listened to on Cdbaby (from one of her older albums, actually), she was using her higher range in a way that actually reminded me of my favorite and fierce-ist parts of Patricia Barber's "Cafi Blue." ~tim ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2007 15:39:08 -0500 From: DanS <2005.carnivore99@verizon.net> Subject: Agnes Milewski - Pretty Boys and Ugly Girls When I discovered this Austrian on MySpace two years ago, I had to enlist the help of Henning Rech across the pond in Germany to acquire a copy of Agnes Milewski's 4-song EP (thank you again, Henning!) That EP remains one of my all-time favorite MySpace finds. On her new full-length release, Pretty Boys and Ugly Girls, Agnes has reworked those tracks and added 11 more. While an immediate comparison to Tori Amos comes to mind, the samples I've heard are arranged with gorgeous string instrumentation that bring her sound closer to that of Jorane and Kate Bush. Agnes also cites Joni Mitchell, Bjvrk, Led Zeppelin and Ani DiFranco as influences. The good news is that this album just arrived today at CD Baby so we can get it in the US without hassling our friends in Germany. I'm already hooked by the EP and the new song samples, so I expect my CD Baby order might just have been her first. :) www.myspace.com/agnesmilewski http://cdbaby.com/cd/agnesmilewski Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2007 23:35:05 -0500 From: "Paul Blair" Subject: Re: Equipoise Check out Mazz Swift of Brazz Tree: http://www.brazztree.com/ On Dec 21, 2007 11:52 AM, Timothy Jones-Yelvington wrote: > I've been doing some research for a women's music-related political-ish > project I'm trying to get off the ground (more on that later), and I've been > trying to identify lesser-known women artists of color who create complex, > multi-dimensional music with multiple "genre" influences. Four off the top of my head, all in the NYC scene: Pamela Means KJ Denhert (who plays guitar like Tuck and sings like Patti simultaneously) Swati Nedra Johnson ... and Paul already mentioned Mazz Swift, who honestly probably fits what you're looking for much better than my list, but I hope this helps! - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #345 ***************************
