In the US, TGC will be showing at a sneak preview in several cities around the country. I don't have a list of cities but people should check movietickets.com, moviefone.com or fandango.com with your zip code and Dec 1 as the date. Check all three if one doesn't show your city (or a suitable theater). I went to fandango first and the only theaters listed were in the burbs, which is impossible for us (we don't own a car), but then I went to movietickets.com and listed there was our favorite theater (River East 21 in Chicago), so I went ahead and bought tickets. Joys. Anyway. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas music. Generally speaking, I dislike most of what's after 1950, with a few exceptions mainly for nostalgia. I love carols though. (Christmas songs AREN'T ALWAYS carols! It irritates me when people mix this up!) It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, What Child Is This, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, etc. Re: Messiah: I'm OK with people "chopping it up", because it means I get to listen to Handel, but I heard the worst thing ever in a store. It was the Hallelujah chorus, mutilated and recast in the cheesiest '80s synthesizers I've ever heard. It made me want to give up music forever. I am not exaggerating. Now then. For recommendations. Probably an obvious choice but I love both of Loreena's Christmas/winter albums. Also, this is my Frank Peterson fandom speaking, but "Christmas Chants" by Gregorian is lovely and has some nice vocals by Amelia Brightman (Sarah's sister.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 20:45:28 -0500 From: "robert bristow-johnson" Subject: re: holiday albums > ----- Original Message ----- > From: morayati@email.unc.edu > To: ecto@smoe.org > Subject: re: holiday albums > Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 18:35:29 -0500 > > > I just now figured out I accidentally sent this to the original poster, not > the ecto list. I love carols though. i mentioned this last year (remember the "Xmas songs that don't suck" thread?). this is very nice: http://www.rounder.com/index.php?id=album.php&musicalGroupId=3022&catalog_id=3840 "I Wonder as I Wander" is the pinnacle on this one. this is also very nice: http://www.annedudley.co.uk/disco_ancientandmodern.html#disco_ancientandmodern but Anne souped up the songs a bit (like Veni Emmanuel, a.k.a. O Come, O Come... but it's really nice). I REALLY, REALLY like the Testimony of John, that has a nice traditional snippet of Patapan in it. and this old classic from the 80s: http://shop.mannheimsteamroller.com/Christmas/A/B0000005MT.htm the last song (Silent Night) is still the only rendition of that old worn-out, too often sung (and too often poorly sung) Christmas song that i actually like (there are all too many renditions of Silent Night that are icky). Chip did a wonderful job on it. i haven't heard the newer Mannheim Steamroller Xmas albums, so i dunno how they sound. note, the Anne Dudley CD is from the 90s, and the other two are from the 80s. but they are *all* very, very nice and worthy of Ecto tastes. actually, i have picked out the best (IMO) out of all three and burned CDs and given them away to folks for Christmas use (shame on me, the bits and bytes weren't mine to give away). it's not Christmas music, but some deeply moving acappella choral music can be had from: http://www.singers.com/6492c/Robert-Shaw-Festival-Singers/O-Magnum-Mysterium/ http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1453009/a/Tavener.htm or nearly anything from http://www.singers.com/choral/robertshaw.html it ain't Happy Rhodes, but it's still very, very, very good. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 20:50:43 -0500 From: "robert bristow-johnson" Subject: Re: Patty Larkin new myspace and CD > ----- Original Message ----- > From: birdie > To: Ecto > Subject: Patty Larkin new myspace and CD > Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 14:54:04 -0800 > > > Hi > > a heads up! > > Patty Larkin has a new myspace and a new CD coming out in January > > you can preview a new song from her upcoming CD here > > LOVE the new sounds! > > http://www.myspace.com/pattylarkinofficial > she's playing at Littleton MA (Rte 2 and I-495), a week from today. any other Bostonians going out there? we can make a little trek and pool a car. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 21:31:09 -0500 From: "Michael Quinn" Subject: RE: holiday albums I enjoy the "Excelsis/Dark Noel" compilation trilogy from Projekt records www.projekt.com, which features a lot of ecto-type artists, as well as Over The Rhine's wonderful "Darkest Night Of The Year". It's not as dark as "Darkest Night of the Year," (a little bit more cocktail, kind of like this year's "Trumpet Child), but it's got the same class and amazing musicianship as everything else they've done, and is filled with originals as strong as any other OTR record (which is what I love about their holiday stuff). ~tim On 11/29/07 9:16 PM, "neal copperman" wrote: > Over The Rhine only released 4 CD's this year, one of which is their > second holiday disc "Snow Angels". This works far better than it should have any right to. Alas, they aren't whole songs. Probably just as well, if I could have a CD with some full-length songs that could be slipped into the CD player at a holiday party or in a mall's PA system, the temptation would be just too much. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 21:43:04 -0800 From: birdie Subject: Annie Lennox Sing project - Join the choir!
