I think it would be fair to say that it's not as powerful an album as her last, Songs in Red and Gray, but it stands on its own. The sound is lighter, brighter, even fun. It harkens back to her early sound as well as something retro/vintage (though I can't place the era). The album is a love song to New York (but not in a sentimental, post-9/11 way), and the city is very much a character in the songs. I also really like the photos and CD booklet. For the record, I adore her self-titled debut and her 2 most recent albums. I find most of the stuff in between, though I enjoy most of Solitude Standing and 99.9 F. Days of Open Hand I found quite boring with maybe 1 exception. I read the books years ago and have been wondering how a film would be. I'd be there anyway even if I hadn't heard about the new Kate song. I hope it's good (the movie, not the song, which I *know* will be good). Btw, if anyone ever meets screenwriter Sergio G. Sanchez (El Orfanato, or in English, The Orpahange), ask him if he likes the Happy Rhodes CD that Shirley Jackson fan in Chicago gave him. He's writing the screenplay for 3993, an upcoming Guillermo del Toro film. I met him last night at a sneak preview of The Orphanage, which is a very good movie. Anyone who likes the mood and atmosphere of films like The Others will like this movie. It's very psychological and spooky. The del Toro film he's working on is a ghost story too. I cheekily told him that Happy's music would be perfect for it. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2007 17:03:00 -0800 From: Subject: Re: New KaTe song coming!!! (and Sergio G. The screenwriters have zero say in what music goes into the films they write (which is sad, b/c if they did I know for a fact there would be much more cool music in movies and on TV). Anybody know any directors? I've got a huge stack of CDs waiting ... ;) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2007 18:00:00 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: New KaTe song coming!!! He was really nice about it and seemed interested, and he liked that we had a love of Shirley Jackson in common, so maybe he'll listen and maybe he'll pass the other CDs on. You Never Know. I can't help it. It's my soul-crushing, spirit-sapping optimism at work. > or, better yet, the music supervisor. Music supervisors are god. And they know it. > The screenwriters have zero say in what music goes into the films > they write True, but this one is going to be a director himself. In fact, he was going to direct The Orphanage, but circumstances were such that he couldn't. Screenwriters often become directors. Look at Charlie Kaufman. > Anybody know any directors? I've got a huge stack of CDs waiting ... ;) Yeah, me too. I missed out on a chance to give some CDs to Todd Haynes last week, because I got to the theater too late for a free I'm Not There screening/Q&A session. Do not think for a second that I'm not kicking myself hard, still. The only good thing was that because the theater filled up so quickly (they chose the smallest theater for this screening, when it could have filled up the biggest), they gave everyone a pass to The Orphanage for last night, and we all got to go see a screening of August Rush, so there were compensations, but no compensation equals the chance to meet Todd Haynes. It wasn't even so much about giving him Happy CDs. If he ever wanted to use a female voice in a movie of his, he could go to his sister Gwen and her band Sophie Lux. I just wanted to meet him because I'm a big fan. It's up to the production company - their publicists - etc to release press releases. The info re: KaTe - went out to the GC website, as well as yahoo and other places today. Best peeps to get music to are music supervisors, editors, and others in post production. producers are often very far removed in an office, and can have zero creative input. they also have a wide range of creditials re: what makes them producers. Most music is placed with the film during the post production (editing/mixing) process.... Often temp music is used and needs to be replaced as permission/licenses can't be gotten or the publisher wants tooooo much money or someone doesnt like it etc... Editors and others often put in the temp music. Screenwriters like Cameron Crowe - who also writes/produces his own films - writes to music he picks and has control over what gets used in his films - but - he is an exception writer/director/producer. Come Back Kate http://www.idfa.nl/en/festival/films-a-z/film.aspx?id=26273 "In Come Back Kate, diehard fans of Kate Bush talk about their special bond with the singer who suddenly became world famous in the late 1970s with the hit Wuthering Heights. In the early 1990s, she turned her back on the music industry and went to live in seclusion on an island in the Thames. The fans in Come Back Kate all have their own ideas as to why she would choose a life of anonymity: "Kate Bush is an island, so she lives on one" is probably the most poetic interpretation. The fans talk about her as if they were good friends, and share their passion for Kate Bush with the camera. The result is a fascinating peek into the phenomenon of fandom. Bush's devotees create their own magic world around her mythical persona. Some of them celebrate her birthday on a beach in southern England, a professor of ancient philosophy writes her a letter, and a young woman who never even heard of her becomes her most famous impersonator, as everyone says she is Bush's spitting image. After a 12-year silence, rumours start circulating: Kate is coming back."
