Still, I've never seen Suzanne's icon status as anything other than an accident of timing (no one else sounded like her in 1986). I think she's a strong singer-songwriter, just not singular or unforgettable. This collection doesn't really change my mind. Take "Ludlow Street" -- a lovely song, but I feel like a dedication to a dead brother should dig deeper emotionally, or somehow leave behind more of a residue. I'm very fond of (though not ecstatic about) Beaty and Crime. I don't know whether it's a matter of where I was in the mid-late 80's or some attribute of the music itself, but I've never found her later work as compelling as her first two albums. There are gems on all of them that stand out, but not enough to delve deeply into the whole album. *smiles* I think I'll be giving them all a re-listen in the very near future. brni > Any comments? I know a few people have been listening to it. Funny, I just dialed it up on the computer today, since I've only listened to it a handful of times so far (technical Issues are preventing me from being able to update my poor ailing iPod any more, sigh). It's got some great stuff on it, but it's not like her last album, which I couldn't stop listening to for weeks after it came out (and I will still find myself listening to it when I want to listen to some Suzanne Vega and am not in a particularly nostalgic mood). I saw her with her band at the Somerville Theater in Boston a few weeks ago, and it was a good show, though I preferred the bits where it was just her performing in a duo with bassist Mike Visceglia to the full-band stuff for some reason ... maybe because I was sitting in front of Alison Cornell, the lastest addition to the band and couldn't get over how *really* uncomfortable she looked the whole time, like she was still figuring out the songs or something. (I know for a fact that couldn't possibly have been the case, and she sounded great on keys, guitar, backing vox and violin, but still, watching her made me feel uneasy.) Also, the show didn't really get a flow going, as Suzanne talked a lot between each song. The explanations/stories were great and helped my appreciation of the record, but they really chopped up the show. The audience wasn't particularly responsive either, but maybe that was because she was standing in Boston talking almost exclusively about New York City, and the Yankees hadn't gotten knocked out of the playoffs yet. ;) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 21:29:35 -0500 From: "robert bristow-johnson" Subject: Re: Suzanne Vega's new one > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Bernie Mojzes" > To: "Neile Graham" > Subject: Re: Suzanne Vega's new one > Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 20:28:05 -0500 (EST) > > > Funny you should mention Ms Vega today - I've had "The Queen and the Soldier" > going through my head since about noon. attached to that is Knight Moves, which had a period of time (in the 90s) where i couldn't get it out of my head. i like Suzanne Vega. similarly to, say, Tori A, she is clearly more well-known than Happy (or Noe or some of our other ecto-goddesses), but i agree less "singular". however, i don't think Suzanne Vega is forgettable. Queen and Soldier, Knight Moves, Small Blue Thing, Undertow (whatever you'll find on that debut album) stay in my memory. some of the other songs i might have forgotten, but will sound pleasantly familiar when i hear them again. she used to have this sorta community of musicians thing going on in NYC (can't remember what it was called). i had wished that Happy and her could have met (and jammed) during the time Happy lived down there, but i doubt the two have ever met. i could be wrong. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #307 ***************************
