The Highline is an elegant, big space with two levels and lots of tables. It boasts a capacity of 700 (and "the largest stage in the city for a club of comparable size"). No columns and good sightlines. The tables are nice, but patrons are still crammed in close together--not quite as close as they used to be at Fez and the Bottom Line, but almost. The menu is pricier than Joe's Pub, and there's the customary minimum-if-you-want-to-sit-at-a-table thing. Hem packed the place; by the time they started there was hardly standing room. The venue kept the place freezing cold, so much so that we had to wear our jackets to keep warm pretty much throughout. Table service was spotty and inexperienced. The sound overall was good, but there was some echo--probably that one was on the sound engineer. April Smith opened at the stroke of 8pm. (Actually "April Smith and the Great Picture Show"--a lead guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards.) She was a good opener: entertaining, varied, and not too long on stage. I'd never heard of her and a quick search doesn't show anything on ecto. She describes her music as "vocally-driven cinemelodic rock"; the music reminded me of Over the Rhine in some ways. Her myspace site gives a good sample, from sassy/bouncy to sensitive to Happy-Rhodes-ish ("They've called the doctors/today's the day/I've lost it finally/and they're putting me away...") On stage she was wearing a black and white checked dress leaving shoulders and knees bare--she must have been freezing--and high-heeled pumps that looked uncomfortable. With her long hair, bangs over her eyes, and red Gibson guitar she looked like a Barbie that had dyed her hair brown and gone a little haywire. http://www.myspace.com/aprilsmithmusic http://www.aprilsmithmusic.com/ (and see her amusing CD release here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RtYtoRd6Es ) Hem also started exactly at its scheduled time of 9pm. The band requires a lot of space, as they have 9 people on stage: Sally Ellyson, the lead singer, two guitars who double on mandolins etc. (one of whom also does backing vocals), a keyboard, a bass player (both standup and electric), drums, pedal steel guitar, violin, and harp. Hem's music is so gentle and low-key you can actually hear the harp. They describe their music as "countrypolitan"--folk-rock in a traditional American style. From the sound you'd think they were from South Dakota, but they're actually from Brooklyn, of all places. Last year I discovered them on their tour with Over the Rhine; it was an excellent match. But although I like this band, a steady diet of their music would lullaby you back to infancy. The show itself was great. I didn't keep a set list, but the ones you'd expect were there: "Half Acre," "Not California," "He Came to Meet Me," "Rainy Night in Georgia." Before "The Pills Stopped Working" Sally commented: "Last tour this was sort of my anthem--I was very pregnant..." A recent blog entry ( http://tinyurl.com/27ond4 ) says they're working on two new recording projects, one of which "will consist of 42 songs 1 for each chapter title in Huck Finn. We are not interested in dramatizing the novel just in using the titles as starting points." http://www.myspace.com/hem http://www.hemmusic.com/ and there's a fan site: http://www.allabouthem.com/ For some reason before last night I had associated the band's name with a throat-clearing sound, or with a nonsense word. It wasn't until I heard the verse "I remember the hem of your dress..." last night that I realized it was a real English word: "Oh *that* kind of hem!" D'oh. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Nov 2007 10:27:08 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Mila Drumke covers "Under the Ivy" (video) Maybe this was posted on ecto a long time ago, but I just ran across it today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQIRX2By1zc Both Meredith and Vickie were at this gig; I still have Meth's post about it. (It was at the Borders where my sister worked!) I'm not sure whether the baby comes in at the right moment or not. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2007 13:04:32 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Happy interview starting NOW! 3:00pm Central time 4:00 Eastern http://deliciousagony.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2007 13:06:27 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Find Me now on iTunes It didn't show up for me at first, but I knew it was there because Chris found it on his computer. Hopefully they'll get in the system tomorrow too. There are now 95 people on the waiting list! She's going to send another box immediately, since this box of 100 is pretty much spoken for.
