Wondering if anyone here caught Gonzilla's tour yet? (Handsford Rowe & Bon Lozaga & band.) We caught them last night at BB Kings in NYC. WOW! Man, if you haven't seen them yet, I highly reccomend catching a show! They were outstanding! I posted some pics from the show on my myspace (www.myspace.com/belewgirl) and some sort of review will follow, (that is if I can find words!!) You can find their touring schedule on their myspace page or just google it. I can't say enough about these guys... It was a magnificent performance, and very sharp. She had a brilliant piece called "Only An Expert Can Deal With A Problem" which provided a refreshingly amusing critique of modern obsession with consultants and television programs dealing with peoples problems, and the proliferation of "advice" publications. It also touched on global warming, with an amusing reference to Al Gore. Something along the lines of "but when one expert makes a movie about the problem, and wins an oscar for the problem, then the other experts kind of have to listen" or something. I can't remember the details, and it probably sounds a little lame out of context, but _in_ context, it was very well done indeed. I hope she releases a CD of it. After watching it, I was inspired to play a CD from "United States Live", which I hadn't played in years, since it would have that live show feel to it. Kind of interesting to hear her "young" voice after her "old" one. Quite a different quality to the timbre of the voice, but the vocal style is still more or less the same. And just as sharp ... And as an interesting segue into last week's Tori discussion, a couple of weeks ago, in the same venue, Tori Amos played in Melbourne, which I didn't see this time. I did go last time in 2005, and it was a good concert, but I figured it would be more of the same (and with two small children, one has to be more discerning these days). It's interesting that Laurie's show (which was part of the Melbourne Festival programme) was only $65 for A-reserve, while Tori's tickets were well over $100 (not sure how much exactly). The 2005 show was good, and I particularly remember her covering Kylie Minogue's "Can't get you out of my head", as the concert was a day or two after Kylie's breast cancer was all over the media. But I felt much more enriched after seeing Laurie Anderson. Somehow it was a show that seemed to have more depth, and her show also had a theatrical, almost narrative character to it, which always appeals to me. It almost felt out of place when the crowd was screaming for an encore at the end - it was like asking for an encore at a Shakespeare production. However, she did come back, and performed "Let X=X" as an encore, which was nice. If she comes your way, I recommend it highly!
