It's hard to call this "Kate's original version" when the guy who posted it created the song from the multiple tracks that KaTe had sent to Prince. I think it's safe to say that if KaTe had created the final song from her batch o' tracks, it wouldn't have sounded the same as what this guy made. Mostly I'm amazed at how echoey her voice is and how mediocre the drums sound. And to be honest, it mostly makes me want to listen to the album version. Now, all that said, it's absolutely fascinating and I'm enjoying it a great deal...and it's great to have in the collection. But, at least for now, I can't imagine a time when I'll prefer it to the Prince-meddled track... Thanks, Vickie! jeff n.p. It is in electronica style though not as electronica as one could suspect considering her collaboration with Ken Theodorsen (Ultraviolet - the UV in name :) ) and the producer Nicholas Sillitoe (of Illumination). The project's releases did get rave reviews here in Norway, but with almost everything happening in the music world worth mentioning didn't take off as it should have done. On another note - Nicholas Sillitoe did produce her new album besides co-writing a few of the songs on it. He did write me last week saying that she will be touring later this year continuing into 2008. I haven't heard anything about any concerts abroad so far, but I recon he'll tell me if there will be any. On another note - I'll be reviving the Velvet Station mailinglist ... it got kinda ghost-like when less and less news from Velvet Belly did reach us. There are surely a few ghosts on the list as well now - if any of you guys are on it with strange addresses I'll let you know :P - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2007 07:30:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Jimmy Williams Subject: Tori & Concerts Very interesting posts regarding Tori's recent work. I saw her after Little Earthquakes at a lovely theater in Charlotte. The audience was perfect -- silent! It was a magic experience, the like of which I have rarely known. I saw her again after Under The Pink in Greensboro and she was still great, the audience was good -- no problems but not quite as magical. Last time I saw her was again in Greensboro at War Memorial Auditorium, after Boys For Pele. She was stoned (so she said), the audience was wretched, and the sound was terrible (how could anyone screw up the sound in that space?!?). I have seen MANY concerts, going back to 1972 when I was 11 and saw the Stones. So many recent concerts have been ruined for me due to people being assholes, that I have had to become very selective at what shows I see where. Not like I am a big snob or terribly judgmental, but why would a group of people want to form a circle and chat with each other standing right in front of a group of performers doing their best to entertain them (saw this at an Ozric Tentacles show)? Now, don't get me started on ticket prices or the evil empire known as Ticketmaster! BTW, maybe it's that the new has worn off of Tori, and maybe it has to do with how she seemed to have been influenced by Trent Reznor (which might not be bad, unless you ARE Tori Amos). I think some of it also had to do with her gaining mass appeal. Lets all pray that if Happy ever gains the recognition she deserves it does not have such an effect on her! I too find her more recent releases lacking in substance. That said, I won't be setting a VCR for her, buying her CDs or paying any arms or legs for tickets to be pissed off at her concerts. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better Globetrotter. I try to keep up, but she doesn't exactly maintain a high profile and none of her recordings is available here in Canada. So, which album should i order next? I think you've been to http://wretchawry.com/happy/samples yes? That would be a good place to start getting familiar with what each album is like. What are some specific songs that you particularly like at this point? I always suggest both The Keep and Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. I think those are essential albums. Well, they're ALL essential, but those show very different sides of Happy. Warpaint, Equipoise, Ecto, they're all essential. Gah, I'm not the one to ask I suppose. To get a decent overview of Happy's earlier work before delving into specific albums, RhodeSongs is a fantastic compilation. There are amazing songs not on that album, but there are songs on that album that aren't available anywhere else, so it's a good deal, even if you do end up buying the "1st4" as I call them. My faves are: * Many Worlds Are Born Tonight - the most electronic and polished of her CDs (my intro to Happy) * Warpaint - kind of quintessential Happy. Happy at her early zenith? Yes, IMHO. * The Keep - beautiful spacier and atmospheric acoustic versions of her classic early songs. Fantastic support from Kevin Bartlett and Carl Adami. You can go here to get a sense of Ectophile's reactions to Happy's CDs.
