Hi Paul, I understand what you are saying. Please know that I was not trying to imply that you were saying that Happy had "ripped off" Kate. I am sorry if my comments came across that way. That definitely was not my intention. I feel like my main point was how musicians hear other's music and how it seeps into their subconscious through osmosis and manifests itself in a new synthesized version. That new version may have similarities and remind one of the original artist's work. I realize and acknowledge that some musician's deliberately learn the style of their influences. To me, the difference between a talented imitator and a gifted artist is that the imitator's work appears nearly identical to the original whereas the artist assimilates their influences and produces something familiar but new and unique to them. A deliberate homage makes sense but then I would believe that Happy would acknowledge that. Ella said: "It just happens that things sound so close/alike that they tip off other songs/artists for us." My friend, musician and fellow Ectophile (even though long absent), Phil Hudson, is always singing lyrics and melodies from one artist's over another artist's song. It got to be a running joke with us when we were working together. He did it to me as well. I would bring in an idea that I was working on and he would somehow see a Pink Floyd or Moodies or someone other artist's song in what I brought to the table. He would then start singing that song's lyrics and melodies over the idea I brought to the table. I don't want to think that I was "that" unoriginal. Maybe Ella is right about the theory of "something like there are only 7 plots in the world". All the best! That is my take on what has happened here with > "Find Me". I feel like it was a completely unconscious act on Happy's part > or just pure coincidence that "Find Me" has any comparison to TNW. It wasn't my intention to suggest that Happy had somehow "ripped off" TNW. When I heard "Find Me," though, I really thought it was a deliberate homage to Kate Bush. I can believe it was something unconscious instead, but I'd still have a hard time believing that the similarities were pure coincidence. In this case it's not simply one aspect that is similar--musical content or mood or lyrical content or genre--it's all of them at once. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2007 15:28:16 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: Firsts Hi, I am not sure if Rock Hula Baby, or Victor Feldman Quartet's Taste of Honey or Johnny Maddox's Asia Minor (Grieg's Piano C in A minor sped up) or Charlie Drake's Hey Mr Livingston was my first 45". Her highly individual and infectious brand of world/folk/jazz has gained her an international following, four acclaimed albums, and performances with several major African icons. But, as intriguing as that may sound, it still doesn't quite do justice to the music of Ashley Maher, who manages to use those fertile sources as the stimulation for songs and performances that are uniquely her own." To me they sounded like a heavier, louder Genesis or Yes, with side-long pieces like "2112" very much paralleling extended prog opuses like "Supper's Ready" or "Close to the Edge", though admittedly with a singer who was an acquired taste. And Neil Peart is still one of the all-time great rock drummers AND interesting lyricists. We re-visit the thread every few years, after all we have new people on ecto (smile), I find it interesting to see all the diverse musical places we've come from. My set of "firsts" was rather long, and started a bit earlier than many of you (anybody for the mid-1940's), I decided to put it on a website that I am *sloooowly* updating, this way you can ignore my list if you want: http://www.geocities.com/johnny.raven/jr-music-firsts.html I have a lot more to put in that website, maybe it's a good thing that I'm now "retired" (smile). - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2007 20:49:59 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Alright, who's bold, persistent and lives in the Philly area?? I hear Peter Jackson is going to be shooting some of The Lovely Bones near there. I **DESPERATELY** want him (or Fran, if she's with him) to have a copy of Find Me. He'll love the monsters, but I really really really want him to listen to "Here and Hereafter" which, while not written about the book, could certainly be part of the movie. While on the surface it's a breezy love song, to delve is to discover it's a deeply sad song about the fear of losing someone you love (and not necessarily a lover...it could apply to a child too). I'll send a CD to anyone who can PROMISE me they'll work like the dickens to get it into the hands of Peter Jackson or Fran Walsh, and who'll send it back to me if they can't manage it, so I can mail it to WETA in New Zealand.
