These are shows that are produced here in Albuquerque. The last one I heard was quite good, so it might be worth a listen if you are a Joni fan. The Emergence of Joni Mitchell Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 1:30 - 4:00 pm Mountain Time on KUNM (89.9 FM / or listen online at www.kunm.org). ..a two-hour examination of one of the most heralded songwriters of her time, Joni Mitchell. In this third installment of his series on the seminal work of important figures in popular music, Ingles and guest commentators explore how Joni Mitchell crafted her artistry and connected with audiences over four decades. Mitchell put the experience of being a woman and being human on artful display through her blatantly honest and confessional lyrics, innovative open guitar tunings and jazz-inflected vocals. The program focuses on Mitchell's key releases to illuminate the musicianship of the woman Rolling Stone called "one of rock's most daring and uncompromising innovators." By mixing Mitchell's music from these pivotal moments with informed commentary from musicians, fans, music critics and archival interviews with Mitchell herself, The Emergence of Joni Mitchell articulates what music lovers have found so compelling about this thoughtful and innovative writer and performer. Special guests include music writers Ann Powers, Anthony DeCurtis, Paul Zollo, Lydia Hutchinson, and Holly George-Warren. Also featured are musicians Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky, Herbie Hancock and others. Joni Mitchell's first album with new songs in over 10 years has just been released. Lack of pacing, cheesed-out production (so sick of that goddam saxophone), etc. Don't get me wrong... There's latter-day Joni that I love... Her jazz experimentations are some of my favorite albums, especially "Mingus," and the early-90's record "Night Ride Home" might actually be my favorite Joni. But this isn't. Nellie McKay - Obligatory Villagers -- This is her best yet. She finally has the organic, full-band accompaniment that her keen musical sense and classic melodies deserve. Without this musicality, her pomo humor and rapid-fire lyrics would only get her so far, but in combination, they add up to something truly singular. I've decided that alongside Regina and Joanna Newsom, Nellie is part of a new triumverate of first-class young female eccentrics... The love them or hate them types that are special enough to completely polarize listeners. Like Tori, Ani and Bjork in the 90's. Meshell Ndegeocello - The World has Made Me the Man of my Dreams - don't know if anyone else on Ecto ever listens to her, or is even interested in this kind of music, but I'm a longtime fan, and this is her strongest yet. She keeps getting more and more artful and more tapped into her creative well, her art, her spirituality. These songs were all written when a modern dance troupe (from LA maybe?) asked Joni for permission to use a bunch of her old songs for a tribute piece. And she decided it would be far more meaningful (and a lot less hokey) if she collaborated with them to compose something new. It's what re-motivated her artistically and brought her out of "retirement." Which I actually thought was a great story, and showed a lot integrity on her part. Which is why I was really looking forward to this, and hoping it would a stunner (I kind of thought it would be awesome if she and Rickie Lee both released year-end top ten albums the same year), but unfortunately it's rather dull. ~tim ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 01:54:26 -0400 From: "Ella McCrystle" Subject: Re: What's the best "worst" song you've ever heard? Years and years ago, it seems, they parodied Bjork's Big Time Sensuality video. I have it around here on my F&S VHS tapes (no, I've never replaced them on DVD -- not yet at least.) Anyway, it cracked me up at the time. I'm sure those who can YouTube better than I can find it. Dawn French is so silly. DOUG! I need to thank you for pointing me to April Winchell. I thought I'd heard bad music, but I was so wrong! This cover of "Teen Spirit" had me dancing along, I'll admit. It's just so wrong... http://www.hostropolis.com/april/mp3/Ragnar.mp3 Night kids -- Ella ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V13 #266 ***************************
